What digital slr camera is best for amateur photographers?

I really want a digital slr camera, but I don’t want to spend a fortune, I’ve been looking at used ones, and refurbished but they’re all so expensive! I’ve been manly looking at getting a canon EOS rebel xs. Is that a decent camera? I currently have a canon regular digital camera and I love it.

1 Star Took Fantastic Photos For TWO Days, then DIED
This was my first SLR camera and I was delighted with it, the photos it took and the deal on the extra lens. Unfortunately after a little bit less than two days of photos, the camera will not turn on with a full battery charge and a memory card with plenty of space on it. When the battery is inserted, a little blue light blinks on and off and that is the extent of the function of the camera.

The battery was fully charged overnight and the camera let to sit with no battery and no card in it but the next morning the same thing happened. A look around on other online forums seems to indicate this is more than an isolated incident with problems powering up the camera. For now, it will have to be the trusty Panasonic Lumix hand held camera for the rest of the trip. After all the hoops to jump through to get a camera delivered while on vacation to have it just stop working after 2 days is very disappointing.

It does take great photos when it works but to die after just two days is totally unacceptable!

Love this camera!

I believe this camera to be my best purchase in years. I have discovered a new way of taking pictures and made some great memories over the past six months and plan on taking a lot more in the future.

I am totally new to the SLR world (coming from a Sony T100) and learned to use the basic functions on this camera in less than a day. I would recommend taking the time to read up on the features(focus on aperture, exposure and how to switch features). The site [...] would be a great start to learn about photography in general.

The picture quality is awesome and the videos are great. They are clear, sharp and the colors are popping really well. The kit lens is OK for outdoor shooting but not the best for low light areas.I have found the 50mm 1.8 to be the best ever lens for less than $100. Takes great pictures indoor and outdoor.

I have seen some complains about the video feature and I have to say it is not that much of an issue. Just learn to manually focus and develop your pan mouvement. Nothing is made perfect in this world so you need to adapt

The features are really easy to understand on this camera and the buttons are well placed no matter what your hand size is. My wife has small hands and can use the camera with no issues.I shoot both in RAW and JPEG and I have learn to do post processing to add my own effects to the pictures.

I would recommend getting a good case ( I purchased a Zing case on Amazon), some lens cleaning gear to carry and take care of the lens.

Buy it spcecially if you are new to the SLR world. Good value.

I’ll be returning this camera because I was hoping to take video but it doesn’t auto focus! That’s major. I’ll just find a good camera and buy a separate video cam.

This is a great camera and worth it. The brochure is very easy to understand and instructions/information are clear. I recently used for my trip to Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks and I am really satisfied. For those who wants to learn photography, this is the best camera to start with.

I couldn’t see wasting so much money on a Canon battery so I thought I give this one a shot. We’ll I can’t tell any difference in the life between my stock battery. So I have to say it’s worth twice the price.

1 Star MY LP-E8 7.4v DOESN’T CHARGE
I got the battery and put it on the canon charger right away.

The light was blinking – which a lot of you have said you have experienced. But after a full half day charge I put it in the camera and it was totally dead…

Ive tried several things like plugging it back in- taking it off a few times and waiting awhile..it is still an exhausted battery after the “charge”

I don’t know if its the battery or the charger connection. I just ordered a 7.4v battery charger from China..that may charge both of my 7.4V

its frustrating..please comment if you know a trick to them..

4 Stars Great – as a secondary/backup battery
Great secondary battery when you’re out on location. Even though it’s rated 1500mAh, it doesn’t last as long as the OEM. I used it for my t2i and it would drain a newly charge battery in about 20 minutes of video recording use. I also used it without my OS off (IS for Canon lenses) and gained about another 10-15 minutes. Honestly, you can’t blame it. Shooting full HD for 20-30 minutes is good. No problems when shooting photographs. I hate being out on location and no where near an outlet, so I always carry a back up battery. I wouldn’t trust this as my only battery out there, but love it as a back up, just in case my first battery dies before the shoot ends. I recommend it.

Bought as a spare for a recent trip. Worked wonderfully. Never got either main or spare down to the “low battery” warning. Took plenty of movies and flash pictures, both this and the OEM battery seemed about equal. Very unscientific test, but if you are planning a trip, this will compliment your OEM battery wonderfully.

After reading some of the reviews, I was a bit concerned about how these batteries may stack up next to the canon battery that came with my rebel T1i. I ultimately purchased two of them, because I was expecting them to die relatively quickly and need to be changed more often than the canon battery. It has actually been the exact opposite so far. My canon battery lasts noticeably LESS long than either of the Opteka batteries. Maybe I received two particularly good copies, but for the price I have been more than pleased with these batteries.

I am very pleased with all products from Opteka. I use the battery grip on my Canon T1i and have had no problems with the batteries. I have shot 300 pictures plus without even loosing one bar. I would recommend both the batteries and the grip to any one.

1 Star Very disappointed.
I have several digital cameras: D700, D70, Canon SX20IS. I have owned a number of professional cameras: Linhof 4×5 studio camera, a Pentax 6×7, Nikon F2, and a Kodak DSC something with a 1.1 MP sensor. The 7D I returned produces the noisiest images I’ve ever seen. I do not recommend it. It has the best software and interface by far. The ergonomics are superb, beautiful LCD. But nothing makes up for all ISO noise images, nothing. Started shooting weddings in 1970.

5 Stars Incredibly versalite camera
Right off the bat, I don’t own this camera (have you seen the price???). But I do work with a guy who owns one, and I’m motivated to comment on it.

I’m working with a new camera guy on a small, indie film that was shot in the Sacramento area. I’m doing the behind-the-scenes still photography. He was shooting that day using a Steadicam, which is a very expensive item. I’m looking for the pro-sumer camcorder like I’ve seen many times before. Instead, he’s there with the Canon 7d. I’m thinking, what is going on? Why has he popped a still camera on a Steadicam? But he’s shooting the entire film on this!

He’s been hired to shoot this film, and the deal is is that he brings his own equipment to the shoot. He told me his still has a few professional camcorders, but the Canon 7d does HD, the quality is excellent, and the camera is inexpensive for what it does. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to get this camera.

The quality of the photographs he’s taken is excellent. Strikingly good, as a matter of fact. And the film quality is excellent as well.

Now I have nice equipment, both film and digital Nikons, and a Canon camcorder miniDV . But my Nikon does not shoot HD video. I don’t really shoot video that needs to be superb quality (I mean my cat is cute and all, but…). So I don’t need this camera, since I already have a nice camcorder. In general, I have too many cameras, period.

I will say that if I were in the market for a pro-sumer camera that did two things, and two things very well, I’d definitely by this Canon 7d. There would be no need to by a separate camcorder. That saves money, potentially a lot of money.

For the quality of the photos and the video, the price is extremely reasonable. My Nikon that shoots pretty much only stills cost me about the same.

Very highly recommended. If you are even thinking about this camera, go out an buy it! I’d love to purchase this camera. It kills two birds with one stone, so to say. I assume this is the direction that many high-end and even medium-range cameras are going in. Less money in the long run, fewer cameras to lug around, fewer tapes and cards to carry. This is also a lot smaller than a huge camcorder, it is lighter, easier to store, and handier to carry all around.

Canon has a real winner here. Five +++ stars for the Canon 7d.

1 Star Canon quality has become a joke
I bought this camera before an extended trip overseas. A few days into the trip, the camera would not turn on. Called Canon Customer Support and they diagnosed it as a Power Management System failure. They said they would fix it quickly if I sent it to them FedEx, but they would not return it to my overseas location, only to a US address, so that wasn’t helpful. Then, I found a Canon Repair Facility in the next big city and they confirmed the diagnosis and said they would fix it in “roughly five days”, which also wasn’t helpful. So I packed it away in the luggage. Upon returning home, I returned it to Amazon (and they sent a new one in ONE DAY – FIVE STARS FOR AMAZON CUSTOMER SERVICE!). But the new one had a large thread or hair sealed inside the lens. So I returned it again and got a refund. This is my second EOS and the first one needed repairs in less than two years, so I am obviously not a satisfied Canon consumer.

If you’re a photo enthusiast this camera you want to get in addition to the HD camcorder. In one: word amazing!

4 Stars Honest Review of the 7D
I bought my 7D in January of 2010.

I’ve used this camera for a quite a bit, both in still and video capacities. I’ll review both separately to explain the pros and cons of each side of the camera.

Stills:

Pros:

-Awesome ISO range and low noise

-Great autofocus (really, really fast)

-Frame rate is ridiculous

-18mp is wonderful. Great detail.

-Custom Picture Styles are extremely satisfying.

Considering I’m more of a video person than a photographer, I’ve really come to appreciate the stills this camera produces. They are clear, even in horrible lighting conditions. Even photos taken in ISO 3200 have very little noise.

I shoot in Manual mode, but when I need to get photos taken in a quick second, I find myself flipping it to Green Box mode and clicking on auto focus and firing off a few frames within a few seconds. The photos are awesome. Considering I photograph events, this has saved me a few times.

I bought the camera body only so I can use the extra money for a 3rd party lens, the Tamron 17-50 F/2.8. Its a great lens, but the range is clearly designed for “walking around” which I do, but when I am a good distance away, the 50mm end of the range is usually not close enough, and not sharp enough.

I do have to say, for a semi-pro camera, the still side of the camera is the highlight. There are very little things to complain about. If you have the lenses you need, this camera will make those lenses create wonderful images.

Now for the cons: Video.

Video:

Pros:

-1080p resolution/ 720p at 60fps.

-Manual controls during shooting.

-Compact body and weather sealed

Cons:

-Rolling shutter

Rolling shutter is when the camera takes a frame by “rolling” the scan lines of the CMOS sensor downwards instead of exposing the sensor all at once (called “global exposure”). This is especially obvious in high action scenes and flashing lights. Shooting at 720 at 60fps, it is reduced, but it is still evident, especially in a moving car and looking at tall objects like trees and poles (they appear to lean). This camera is best used in low action scenes with a stabilizer like a tripod or shoulder mount (which kind of defeats the purpose of having a portable camera).

-Chroma sampling

I understand that some of the readers wont know what this is. But for the film people who are considering buying this camera, this is for you.

The sampling ratio is 4:2:0. Which isnt prime for green screen. But another side effect is color grading is affected by this. It creates unsightly artifacts in the footage. There are tutorials online on how to upload custom picture styles to greatly increase the dynamic range of the camera (and custom Picture Styles to create amazing colors in the camera), but there is one more thing that affects the footage: Noise.

-Noise Reduction

The noise reduction in video is no where near as good as the picture side of the camera. Considering that some might not have the best light available, they’ll have to boost the ISO, and once it peaks past 1000iso, the noise becomes more evident. Canon markets this camera as a monster in low light situations (which it is), but the noise is very painful to see, especially when the footage is mixed with HVX-200 footage. The difference is obvious.

So, since a good portion of buyers will not really care for the video, most of my cons are irrelevant. It’ll be a wonderful camera for the birthday clips and holidays. But for people who want to buy this (or the 5D) for film production (as I did), the limitations should be considered.

It is a good camera for dramatic films with little to no action. But, action is a difficult thing to capture on this camera without it looking gelatinous.

Overall, its a great camera. Actually, this is a wonderful camera. It is limited in the video side, but for a $1700, it offers a relatively inexpensive high definition capability (most film quality HD camcorders are $3000+ and they have inadequate lenses) and a great “equalizer” for film students or indie film productions.

For an example as to how the camera deals with concert areas, I have this video I made. Look at the strange lines created in the flashing lights. Also, be warned, this camera will be destroyed if lasers hit the sensor (as shown is certain videos online).

5 Stars PERFECT size for the Nikon D90 DLSR Camera!
This brand is just as good as the most expensive brands quality-wise and alot cheaper in price than the leading brand. I like it because it is discreet. I do not need a bag that says Nikon on it. I’ve never needed a reminder that I have a Nikon in the bag and plus why bring more attention to yourself by flashing it.

Anyway, this case is a perfect size for a Nikon D90 kit with a 18mm-105mm lense. Anything bigger than that, it won’t fit. It is quite snug in the case. It has a zipper pocket inside to fit extra memory sticks and a Nikon ML-L3 remote. If you have the strap attached to the camera itself, you will need to tuck it in between the spaces inside the case. I really like the carrying handle. The case also has a mesh pocket in the outer-front part of the case, perfect for extra memory sticks. I like the pleather feel of the case because it keeps the camera relatively dry from rain and other precipitation. As for the belt holder, I do not recommend you using it because it is quite heavy with the camera in it and may cause unexpected mooning, thus, making your pants fall down if your pants are not on tight enough.=)

2 Stars The Sweet price is it’s best aspect. The only admirable one.
Started off as a good cheap option for my Nikon D40 with the 18-55mm lens.

However, the zippers (2) went bad in the next few months. I wouldn’t say I am the most gentle of handlers but they did not last me. Right now I am having to make do with this but I hope it aren’t long before I scale up to a better (quality), more comfortable (shoulder strap) & more durable/ tough (zippers and overall) case in the near future. It is worth a 2.5 star I would think.

Even if you are on a low budget keep this in mind before you jump onto this one.

Too small !! not even an inch left literally !! Spare battery, Lens cap etc have no space ! unbelievable ! A total waste, now I am searching for a slightly larger one to keep the charger etc etc.

I got this case for my Canon Xsi – great case, very durable, perfect size for the camera. Can’t beat the price!

4 Stars portability for the standard user
The case is durable and compact, and can fit into your backpack easaily. I’m able to comfortably place a Canon T2i with the strap placed first. Don’t plan on storing much else in this case except your camera with the standard lens. It doesn’t appear to accommodate longer lenses, but you’ll get away with an extra battery and SD card. If your a serious photographer planning on bring extra gear, get something bigger. If you go on trips/hikes/theme parks and will bring a backpack, this case will do the trick and keep your camera safe in your backpack.

5 Stars Perfect for a Prosumer
This is my first DSLR, and I am so happy with the purchase. I have wanted a nice camera for years, and I finally had some extra money to make the investment. At $900+, it’s a tad expensive for a casual photographer, but I looked at the purchase as an investment for several years. The image quality is wonderful, and the video is absolutely stunning. Everything in life looks significantly more interesting with this piece of hardware at your side.

5 Stars Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR
I just purchased this camera 7-15 and its the best DSLR for the money! I looked at D70 Nikon’s and they couldn’t touch this.

I bought mine at bestbuy because they had it for $899.00 which is a great deal,also bought the camera bag and the 8 gb of sandisk extreme sd card. This camera takes some amazing photos.

1 Star Overpriced, overhyped, review-manipulated crap that will break soon.
It’s a real turnoff when you drop better part of $1000 on a camera and right out of the box it feels like a cheap plastic toy, like something you’d give to your kid. No nice crisp feel to the selector knob, loose actually, not even as good as my old non-digital 35mm (a Chinon, possibly older than me, but it takes great pictures). Plugged in the brand knew 16gb sd card, didn’t feel like it went in right, like sticking the card into playdough, again, shouldn’t be having these kind of doubts “at this price point.” Oh brother. As for the guy who wrote “…The camera is very small and light. It is not weather-sealed or as durable as some of the more expensive SLRs, but it doesn’t “feel cheap” in my opinion…” Well in my opinion, IT DOES FEEL CHEAP and i’m taking it back tomorrow. But to be fair, i’m sure he’s right about it not being weather-sealed.

Update 7/18/2010: Much happier now, got the Pentax K-7 (weather sealed), better feel and very good pictures. Camera body, plus Pentax 18-55 lens lens cost $926.50 plus shipping. All through Amazon. Perhaps Pentax allocates more resource to product quality than marketing and monitoring of reviews.

I have a friend that has a Canon 7D and yes that thing is a beast, but this isnt about size. Its about pictures. As far as Im concerned and my friend as well, this camera takes just as good pictures as the 7D. And for half the price. Video takes a little getting used to, but WELL worth it. Im a prof. photog. and this was a big upgrade from my XSi. Well worth the price over the 7D.

I purchased this battery for my Canon 5 D Mark2. This OEM battery works perfect with my camera and it reconizes the voltage and type of battery.I would recommend using this battery

with Canon camera’s. This unit holds the charge for a long time. There are other batteries that will fit our specific camera’s but they are not as good as the original. Be aware the voltage

I bought this LP-E6 Battery for a Canon 7D DSLR. It was delivered very quickly and I immediately used it for an airshow, taking over two hundred pictures. The battery lasted and continues to provide power.

5 Stars The price of perfection!!
The new battery for the EOS 7D is a bit expensive ($110.00 when I needed it),

but it has superb power(1800 mah)and gives the user great status feedback through the camera. Canon had embedded a chip in the battery that makes it difficult for the ‘knockoff’ folks to duplicate it at a more reasonable price.
