New Canon EOS Rebel T2i EOS 550D Test

There is great interest around the new Canon EOS Rebel T2i, the digital SLR that will take the 18 megapixel like Canon EOS 7D (the highest resolution currently available on a DSLR with APS-C) the reach of many photographers, along with the possibility of Full HD video recording capabilities with extensive manuals.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i available in the network where the characteristics of the newly formed digital camera are compared with earlier Canon EOS Rebel T1i and the Canon EOS 50D and Canon EOS 7D, these higher-end models, highlighting changes and innovations introduced in this model.

“The Canon EOS Rebel T2i is positioned between the EOS Rebel T1i and EOS 50D SLR offers a higher resolution for both but without any replacement. Boasting the same sensor dala proof digital SLR Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18-megapixel EOS 7D does not agree, however, the double image processor DIGIC IV in the case of the Rebel T2i is single, limiting speed continuous shooting at 3.7 fps. Important feature, given the propensity of this reflex to video footage, is the new high resolution LCD monitor and 3:2 ratio and redesigned user interface, now even more practical. The possibility of shooting video have been widely expanded with the support of full HD mode with a range of different values of frame rates to choose from.

Canon Rebel T2i Construction and ergonomics

The EOS Rebel T2i, EOS Rebel T1i with the confronting, it is built to fit its market niche and that between the entry-level and pro-sumer range of Canon digital cameras. Less robust and heavier than a 50D or EOS 7D, but certainly more solid entry-level Canon EOS Rebel XS. Fewer protections and sealing against dust and water and the shutter is not qualified to a minimum number of shots, where the EOS 7D and EOS 50D are guaranteed for 150,000 and 100,000 respectively shots.

The Rebel T2i Sensor and image processor

The sensor of the Canon EOS Rebel T2i seems to be the same as the EOS 7D note that provides the highest resolution available on an entry level SLR. But unlike the 7D, the Rebel T2i has only DIGIC 4, more than adequate for normal shooting situations, but with limited speed continuous shooting at 3.7 fps.

The new sensor supports the same range of sensitivity of the EOS 7D (EOS 50D and Rebel T1i) with standard range from 100 to 6400 ISO as a step expansion H1 to ISO 12800, for comparison, the EOS 50D and Rebel T1i have basic range of 100-3200 ISO with two expansions in 6400 and 12800.

Canon Rebel T2i Video and Live View shooting

Live View mode on the Canon EOS Rebel T2i is more or less similar to other recent Canon digital SLRs. Moreover, the new high-resolution LCD display with 3:2 ratio, gives a very clear and accurate picture of the scene. Autofocus is supported with a choice of three different AF modes, and its activation occurs by pressing the shutter button, option very comfortable and innovative than other video cameras from Canon.

Buttons modified for Canon EOS Rebel T2i

The buttons on the back of the camera have been redesigned to improve functionality. The layout is similar to the Rebel T1i with two differences: the first is the button dedicated to video recording to the right of the LCD monitor and allows switching between Live View and Video mode, the second is the button that was used with the Rebel T1i Function Print / Share and is now dedicated to the renewed interface rapid adjustment of camera settings for shooting. Two changes that greatly improve the usability of the camera than previous.

When shooting video, the photographer can change the aperture, ISO sensitivity, white balance and shutter speed, the latter with a minimum of 1/30? at 30 fps or 1/60? to 50 and 60 frames per second. A new feature of “clipping” video allows a magnification of the scene up to 7X recording in standard mode (640×480 pixels), functioning as a sort of digital zoom.

Canon Rebel T2i Performance and image quality

The performance of the camera under test are comparable to those of the EOS 7D that we tested in November and this is not surprising. The images are consistently sharp and vibrant color saturation, perhaps even more, particularly visible on the red. The quality of the video clips at full resolution and 24fps full HD is great, a bit less than in standard mode that is too soft. The audio quality obtained with the microphone that is good and above average.

The nine AF points of the Canon EOS Rebel T2i

The autofocus is fast and generally accurate, some miss in situations of strong light and contrast. In the same circumstances a slight tendency to overexposure of the highlights is sometimes present. Focusing in low light is very good, even superior to that of the Canon EOS 7D we tried (with the same lens used).

The sensor system of autofocus is the same as the EOS Rebel T1i but with two more AF points, nine instead of seven as the Canon EOS 50D and Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Also available on this EOS the system of automatic recognition of faces (face detection).

The metering can count on 63 areas that are evaluated by Canon iFCL system with a choice of multi-mode area, mainly central, partial (9% approx.) Or spot (4% approx.).

The presence of noise in high sensitivity shooting is similar to the Canon EOS 7D. The test images are virtually free from noise up to ISO 6400 with growth seen at high ISO test digital SLR Canon EOS Rebel T2i ISO 12800 of which images become softer. Applying the noise reduction function a certain softness is visible in the frames taken from ISO 800 up, but to little apparent lower sensitivity.

The Rebel T2i White Balance

Here too, the auto white balance is similar to other Canon digital SLRs we've tested. A component always this hot in incandescent light and a near-perfect performance in fluorescent light. Many customization options including white balance while shooting, including bracketing.

Buy the EOS Rebel T2i if:

* Do you want a lightweight, high-resolution camera, able to resume the same way still images and video.
* Do you want a digital SLR with an excellent built-in flash
* Want a simple camera to use but very comprehensive
* Do you want to use the ISO sensitivity is high for images that you shoot video
* Please use the autofocus during the video shoot.

5 Stars They Work
I’m using two of them in my Battery Grip for Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i SLR BG-E8.

No complaints.

great battery for canon t2i last longer than the canon battery and a great vendor thememstore

5 Stars Great Buy
I couldn’t see wasting so much money on a Canon battery so I thought I give this one a shot. We’ll I can’t tell any difference in the life between my stock battery. So I have to say it’s worth twice the price.

1 Star MY LP-E8 7.4v DOESN’T CHARGE
I got the battery and put it on the canon charger right away.

The light was blinking – which a lot of you have said you have experienced. But after a full half day charge I put it in the camera and it was totally dead…

Ive tried several things like plugging it back in- taking it off a few times and waiting awhile..it is still an exhausted battery after the “charge”

I don’t know if its the battery or the charger connection. I just ordered a 7.4v battery charger from China..that may charge both of my 7.4V

its frustrating..please comment if you know a trick to them..

4 Stars Great – as a secondary/backup battery
Great secondary battery when you’re out on location. Even though it’s rated 1500mAh, it doesn’t last as long as the OEM. I used it for my t2i and it would drain a newly charge battery in about 20 minutes of video recording use. I also used it without my OS off (IS for Canon lenses) and gained about another 10-15 minutes. Honestly, you can’t blame it. Shooting full HD for 20-30 minutes is good. No problems when shooting photographs. I hate being out on location and no where near an outlet, so I always carry a back up battery. I wouldn’t trust this as my only battery out there, but love it as a back up, just in case my first battery dies before the shoot ends. I recommend it.

5 Stars Awesome camera!!
Love this camera!

I believe this camera to be my best purchase in years. I have discovered a new way of taking pictures and made some great memories over the past six months and plan on taking a lot more in the future.

I am totally new to the SLR world (coming from a Sony T100) and learned to use the basic functions on this camera in less than a day. I would recommend taking the time to read up on the features(focus on aperture, exposure and how to switch features). The site [...] would be a great start to learn about photography in general.

The picture quality is awesome and the videos are great. They are clear, sharp and the colors are popping really well. The kit lens is OK for outdoor shooting but not the best for low light areas.I have found the 50mm 1.8 to be the best ever lens for less than $100. Takes great pictures indoor and outdoor.

I have seen some complains about the video feature and I have to say it is not that much of an issue. Just learn to manually focus and develop your pan mouvement. Nothing is made perfect in this world so you need to adapt icon smile Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15 1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3 Inch LCD and EF S 18 55mm f 3 5 5 6 IS Lens

The features are really easy to understand on this camera and the buttons are well placed no matter what your hand size is. My wife has small hands and can use the camera with no issues.I shoot both in RAW and JPEG and I have learn to do post processing to add my own effects to the pictures.

I would recommend getting a good case ( I purchased a Zing case on Amazon), some lens cleaning gear to carry and take care of the lens.

Buy it spcecially if you are new to the SLR world. Good value.

1 Star Took Fantastic Photos For TWO Days, then DIED
This was my first SLR camera and I was delighted with it, the photos it took and the deal on the extra lens. Unfortunately after a little bit less than two days of photos, the camera will not turn on with a full battery charge and a memory card with plenty of space on it. When the battery is inserted, a little blue light blinks on and off and that is the extent of the function of the camera.

The battery was fully charged overnight and the camera let to sit with no battery and no card in it but the next morning the same thing happened. A look around on other online forums seems to indicate this is more than an isolated incident with problems powering up the camera. For now, it will have to be the trusty Panasonic Lumix hand held camera for the rest of the trip. After all the hoops to jump through to get a camera delivered while on vacation to have it just stop working after 2 days is very disappointing.

It does take great photos when it works but to die after just two days is totally unacceptable!

4 Stars Canon Rebel Camera
Great camera, pretty easy to get used to, picture quality is excellent, you need to also get a UV and polarized lens for better quality pics

5 Stars Great Camera!
This is a great camera and worth it. The brochure is very easy to understand and instructions/information are clear. I recently used for my trip to Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks and I am really satisfied. For those who wants to learn photography, this is the best camera to start with.

3 Stars Don’t expect to take video
I’ll be returning this camera because I was hoping to take video but it doesn’t auto focus! That’s major. I’ll just find a good camera and buy a separate video cam.

5 Stars Perfect for a Prosumer
This is my first DSLR, and I am so happy with the purchase. I have wanted a nice camera for years, and I finally had some extra money to make the investment. At $900+, it’s a tad expensive for a casual photographer, but I looked at the purchase as an investment for several years. The image quality is wonderful, and the video is absolutely stunning. Everything in life looks significantly more interesting with this piece of hardware at your side.

5 Stars Awesome Camera…
Wow… Can’t make better decision. I have been in love with this Camera. With 18-55mm and 50mm F1.8 lens it turns out to be the great camera with the price. Video… Wowwww..

5 Stars Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR
I just purchased this camera 7-15 and its the best DSLR for the money! I looked at D70 Nikon’s and they couldn’t touch this.

I bought mine at bestbuy because they had it for $899.00 which is a great deal, also bought the camera bag and the 8 gb of sandisk extreme sd card. This camera takes some amazing photos.

1 Star Overpriced, overhyped, review-manipulated crap that will break soon.
It’s a real turnoff when you drop better part of $1000 on a camera and right out of the box it feels like a cheap plastic toy, like something you’d give to your kid. No nice crisp feel to the selector knob, loose actually, not even as good as my old non-digital 35mm (a Chinon, possibly older than me, but it takes great pictures). Plugged in the brand knew 16gb sd card, didn’t feel like it went in right, like sticking the card into playdough, again, shouldn’t be having these kind of doubts “at this price point.” Oh brother. As for the guy who wrote “…The camera is very small and light. It is not weather-sealed or as durable as some of the more expensive SLRs, but it doesn’t “feel cheap” in my opinion…” Well in my opinion, IT DOES FEEL CHEAP and i’m taking it back tomorrow. But to be fair, i’m sure he’s right about it not being weather-sealed.

Update 7/18/2010: Much happier now, got the Pentax K-7 (weather sealed), better feel and very good pictures. Camera body, plus Pentax 18-55 lens lens cost $926.50 plus shipping. All through Amazon. Perhaps Pentax allocates more resource to product quality than marketing and monitoring of reviews.

5 Stars Rival to 7D
I have a friend that has a Canon 7D and yes that thing is a beast, but this isnt about size. Its about pictures. As far as Im concerned and my friend as well, this camera takes just as good pictures as the 7D. And for half the price. Video takes a little getting used to, but WELL worth it. Im a prof. photog. and this was a big upgrade from my XSi. Well worth the price over the 7D.

5 Stars NOT FOR THE Canon 50D
I ordered this with little investigation…..for all of you canon 50d owners it is not for your camera. This plug is a small one prong plug the 50d has a larger three prong plug.

I am sure the product is great for the price if it work work on my stuff!

5 Stars works great
works much better than aftermarket release. definitely buy. some people say the cord is too short but its the perfect length. if you want a longer cord go to your local radio shack and purchase rca cables i believe, and a couple reducer pieces. if you go there and bring the shutter release you should be able to find everything that youu need. i have roughly 30 ft of cable now, which is nice to be able to set the camera outside near a busy bird feeder go inside and creep out a window and fire away. ive gotten some pretty amazing backyard bird pictures this way.

3 Stars Typical Canon – over priced accessory.
This is not as bad as some accessories but still, $23.00 for plastic is bad.

It does the job and works fine. Cord is too short for my liking – YMMV.

5 Stars Canon Remote Switch RS60 E3
The Canon Remote Switch RS60 E3 is more than I thought it would be I am using the Canon Remote Switch as a left hand shutter button as my right hand has nerve damage. I have a L video bracket that I mount on the left side of my Canon EOS REBEL Xsi and taped the Canon Remote Switch to the L video bracket works very well.

5 Stars Remote switch for Rebel XS
I bought the remote switch for my Rebel XS and what else can I say but it performs its task beautifully, it allows me to set up the camera on a tripod and reduces the amount of camera shake by not having to to push the shutter button on the camera, yes the cord is a little short if you are looking at it for self-portraits, however as a tool to help prevent camera shake when using a tripod this is superb!
