5 Stars Fun little pocket shooter
Tons of fun. Surprising quality in such a tiny package. It takes some serious focus to hold it steady because it is so light and tiny but if it were heavy and huge it would not fit in my pocket. I love that I can plug it directly into my computer with its built in USB. The audio quality is pretty good too. The biggest hassle is buying a memory card but my brother found one on a Christmas sale for me so I didn’t have to deal with it.

I have taken it hiking, on trampolines, to family reunions, and it has attracted all sorts of attention when people figure out it is not a cell phone. The only peeve I have with the camera is that the lens isn’t very wide so you have to take a step back to get your friends into focus. The playsport (zi8′s waterproof little brother) has a much more reasonable lens and is waterproof. You need an external cable to upload with that one which I don’t always have on me.

1 Star needs work…
If you listen to the PR you know the good stuff about full HD that works nice in the Kodak lab. Now here’s the rest…

I’m not a pro. I’m just a dumb guy that wants the Kodak Zi8 camera to work right in the real world. Here’s my experience…

First, the sound sucks. I first used this Kodak Zi8 on the America’s Cup sailboat Stars & Stripes. A once in a lifetime event for me. Couldn’t hear my girlfriend talk or anyone else–just the hammering noise of the wind with the built-in mic. Not good. A major disappointment. Tried the smaller Sony exterior mic with the noise protection covers but they didn’t work. Lots of buzzzzz-ing sounds and wind noise. Plus they kept falling out. Didn’t fit right. Etc.

Note: If I get a good mic that might actually work–it’s bigger than the camera! What’s the point of going small!

IMPORTANT: You can’t see the screen outside in the real world. It’s shinny black in the sunlight. So you can’t frame the image or see the controls or see the camera turn off because the battery just died. No alarms.

Plus the view is narrow, very very narrow. A wider angle could give you a chance to catch some of the action by pointing. But no such luck with this Kodak.

Also, the Zoom is way toooo fast.

Also, the battery last maybe an hour, and you can’t replace the battery with a tripod on. You must take the tripod off before you can open the camera. Try doing this on one of the fastest sailboats in the world with the crew cranking wenches like madmen and the boom swinging an inch over your head. I’m just lucky I didn’t get a swim in the Pacific.

Also, try to hold this Kodak or Flip camera steady. It’s a joke. Can’t be done without a bulky system.

The idea of a small high quality video camera is great!–but the reality is not so hot. I feel cheated. Last time I purchase a Kodak.

Do you think Kodak could develop a better mic?

Sure they can.

Do you think Kodak can develop a quick change battery system?

That’s an easy one. Just redesign smart, be thoughtful. Use the camera in the real world.

Do you think Kodak can develop a better screen?

Yeap. Sony and the other Japanese camera companies have them.

Do you think Kodak can add a better selection of lenses?

Uh-huh. They know all about that stuff.

Do you think Kodak can come up with a reasonable steady-cam system?

You bet.

Do you think they can make the best little video camera in the world?

Why not? They have a impressive history in still and motion picture film.

Then thy don’t they and dominate the market… ?

Good question.

5 Stars Awesome with a BIG A!!!!!
I soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo love this new toy in my life! It is so easy, so fun and so practical for what I use it for! (ball games, day trips, craziness in my house with an 8yr old boy! LOL!) I just love it! The picture quality is TERRIFFIC too…. I have ZERO complaints! I researched this little bugger and I did see some not so glowing remarks and at first thought “oh oh…what did I get myself into”…..but no worries whatsoever! Installation is a snap, the camera is virtually idiot proof and for a computer loser like me…I am not very savvy saddly, it was a DREAM! I love this little gizmo and cannot say enough good about it! I am totally planning to add an additional mic to it and extra rechargeable batteries because with summer right on my heels I KNOW I’ll be using this alot more!

1 Star pos (piece of you know what)
This camera comes with nothing worthwhile….You have to buy memory separately…It comes with about 30 seconds of memory…ad does not memtion that..It records in 30 second bits..No provision for an extended run…

What a waste of money..jb

2 Stars Not quite as good as the Flip
After reading reviews on how this was a better camera than the Flip, I purchased one to try out. I have several Flip Minos, a Zoom and this, that I use to create YouTube videos. The video quality is ok but I think the Flip is still a better camera. I’ve been using the Flips for 1 1/2 years for school projects and yes, I wish the mic were better but I’ll stick by the Flip and maybe give the Kodak away. I was not impressed with the camera set at 1080P setting.

4 Stars Great backup for an Apple.
Simple to use. I just connected it to a USB port on my Apple Macbook Pro. Time Machine started up om my Macbook. I checked the settings and it has been backing up automatically ever since. What backup could be easier? I’ve used Windows for a long time. Since I switched to Apple, I will never go back.

5 Stars Good drive to carry important stuff
Very good stuff to carry anywhere you go. Drive takes the internal power from the computer and is very handy.

2 Stars Nice hardware rendered useless by dreadful firmware.
Yes, I said “rendered useless”.

Unless you intend to attach this device to a computer system and are willing to deal with the crappy firmware based VCD, I’d avoid this and the rest of the similar WD drives like the plague.

My Passport Essential was purchased with the intention of tethering it directly to a camera for use as a mass storage device. The VCD firmware confuses the camera to the point that even when disabled you can’t be sure the writable partition will be recognized correctly.

WD have shown almost no interest in correcting their mistakes so this is the last of their drives I will buy.

Do yourself a favor, spend your money elsewhere.

4 Stars nice looking, poorly executed software
Nice amount of storage in a compact form case housing could be a little more rugged, the USB cable can be a little annoying It actually has to lock in and connector does look a little fragile, I can see where you think you have it on but you don’t have it on right, my drive came with a soft sleeve but got it somewhere else. Backup and encryption software was a good idea, but putting it on a partition you cant delete to recover the space was a bad idea(although I don’t know maybe there were some sort of technical reasons for doing it like this), although its only a relatively small amount of space I think about one gig, the buyer should have the option to delete it. They did come out with a somewhat half _ solution, you can update the firmware and hide the partition but its still gone for use.

1 Star String of Problems
I got this drive (1TB) about three months ago from Pantip Plaza in Bangkok. Within the first week, got several error messages. Still kept on using it. Found that files written while connected to an XP system cannot be read in a Vista laptop. Contacted WD and they said Data Corruption. Need to reformat.

I was using it to store images and the Lightroom catalog. After I spent most of today making sure my backups work with the catalog in another system, I am ready to reformat.

Or maybe I am ready to throw it in the trash.

5 Stars Amazon is the best
Satisfactory. You buy the same product from any other internet market place, I assure you chances of getting a crappy piece. I bought this same item twice at a little lower price from another well known website. First time, they took all the time in the world and send me a defected item. Second time, they didn’t even bother notifying that the seller was fraud, sending the item was out of question.

Amazon took 3 days to process, ship and deliver the item safe and working. The sellers here are professionals and Amazon verified.

About the product. I am using this for PSP gaming at the moment. This is worth its money. Cheaper than the store price, this 8 GB memory card is handy for what i intended. But again, the more the merrier. Though I am satisfied with the 8 GB card, if you are a gaming freak, go for 16gb.

1 Star Memory Stick PRO Duo
All mach2 memory sticks are garbage or just the 5 that i’ve purchasrd from various stores!

5 Stars good stuff
I use this memory stick in my phone and it has worked nicely so far. Transfers have been fast, no dropped data, no problems whatsoever. I was a little wary of the price at the time and that I’ve never owned a Sony memory card device, but after having some trouble with a Sansa card, I decided to try some other companies out there. Glad I did. Highly recommend.

4 Stars Sony Stick for Sony product
I bought this Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo for my Sony device – works great – but was more expensive than a memory card of the same size.
