The pocketable PowerShot S90 gives powerful everyday shooting. Shoot quickly with a lens control ring and get superior low-light performance with a high-sensitivity 10.0 MP CCD and f/2.0 lens. A high-sensitivity CCD sensor gives outstanding image quality in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Even images taken at high ISOs show exceptionally low noise levels and a wide dynamic range. A bright f/2.0 aperture allows exceptional versatility, capturing low-light images and fast-moving subjects at higher shutter speeds. A wide angle of 28mm lets you put more in the frame, while Canon’s optical IS reduces blur caused by camera shake.

5 Stars Great camera for the money
This is one of the greatest cameras I have owned. Picture quality is phenomenal. Very versatile. Like taking SLR pictures with a digital point and shoot. Some people have mentioned problems accidentally moving the ring when taking pictures but I have not had this problem. The only issue I have had is that the flash often pops up where I am holding the camera. Very small but powerful. Highly recommend.

1 Star Blurry Pictures…Ugh!
I bought this item just recently. I am a point and shoot photographer. I have owned several point and shoot Canons and have been quite happy with them. This one just didn’t behave like my other Canons. Half of my pictures were blurry and all seemed to be somewhat grainy. Total diappointment! I have sent it back to Amazon. I am not sure what to buy at this point, since I have always been a Canon fan, but this has shaken my trust in the product.

4 Stars First small form camera…
Quick impressions:

1. Working through the manual is not the quickest, so am using strictly on “auto” for now. Which means my shots are likely less than optimal at this point.

2. Not sure about “low light” as flash generally takes over and what you get is a flash picture. Not sure if flash can be overridden. But shot 85 pics indoors at a wedding reception and pics turned out okay, flash and all.

3. Regarding those same pics, they appear reasonably sharp when viewed on a 26″ high definition screen, though shot and stored as high res JPG’s.

4. Heavier than I expected, but I take that as a good thing. Otherwise, very portable. As part of intent was for my wife to easily carry in her purse, as we were missing too many picture opportunities with the grandkids. And she took most of the pics at the wedding reception.

5. Display screen is nice. No issues as such. 1st camera we’ve had without a viewfinder. So getting use to that.

6. The telephoto-wide angle lever is smaller than on my prior cameras, so I find myself fumbling just a bit to get a good finger tip hold to operate, but I would expect that to ease over time.

All in all, reasonably satisfied with my purchase.

5 Stars Love this camera
When it comes to photography, I am lame. Even though I am an artist, I could arguably be the worst photographer on the planet. My mom once complained that art school was a waste after seeing my shots. Seriously.

The main issue is a combination of clunky menus that work against you in the spur of the moment, the quality of the camera, or portability. You had to compromise on something. I hate lugging gear or fumbling with a lens cap but wanted something better than a simple point and shoot. Shooting photos was more frustrating than fun. It seemed like a chore.

The S90 is a really fun camera to use and takes amazing pictures. The lcd screen is large with good color which makes it easy to compose shots. The onscreen information is really useful since I’m always forgetting something. It fits in a pocket and is easy to customize (I Googled “S90 tips” to customize settings). The control ring feels intuitive and this is the first time I can adjust shots on the fly. The layout of the buttons make sense. I have never ever ever been this comfortable with a camera.

The other reviewers on Amazon were spot on about the experience. I am one of the small group of people who are fine with the ergonomics. I would agree with others that the flash takes getting used to and the couple of times it popped up, I was startled and dropped the camera but had the wrist strap on so no harm was done.

This is a camera that is fun to use and takes amazing indoor or outdoor shots with excellent color.

p.s. The non hd video is fine for my purposes since I am a worse videographer than a photographer. Besides, if you ever import stuff into a computer, the HD files are too large to process for what most people would ever need.

5 Stars Hard to find a better one
I just want to touch a couple of points, since they seem to be the most controversial:

-the back ring, the one all the people complain about: maybe it’s my way to hold the camera, but I never accidentally moved it, so it’s not a constant. There is a website that offers, for about 3 bucks, a sort of plastic ring that goes around it and it appears it removes the problem

-battery life: I really don’t find it limiting, I shoot more than 500 pictures with it, some of them with flash

excellent camera, it happens that I bring it even when I have the reflex with me, and for travelling in big cities it’s a blessing, pocket size and wonderful pictures, a lot of control!

4 Stars Great product
I previously had a Canon digital camera. I really like the small size of the camera. It takes quality pictures and the functions are easy to use. I would recommend to family and friends.

5 Stars Truly outstanding
When our Nikon Coolpix died, we were left with a lot of usable accessories, etc. But I compared all the reviews and this Canon stood out, so I bought it instead of another Coolpix. From the first picture taken in a dimly lit kitchen to pictures taken from a slow-moving bus to pictures of two dogs walking down a wooded path, I have been amazed and pleased. The camera is super-quick to focus and very quick to take a picture. The stabilizing feature, the ability to capture movement (in auto mode), the adaptation to any lighting condition and any focus challenge all amaze me. The ease of use and image quality makes me want to pull the camera out at every opportunity–it’s not just handy, it’s good! For about $50 more than my defunct Nikon, I have a far better camera that takes pictures as good as my much bigger ultra-zoom.

I did not buy it for the video, but I enjoyed filming dolphins sporting in the Atlantic from my motel room balcony and then editing the video right in the camera to cut out the frames of empty ocean–the sound was surprisingly clear, too.

I am now actually grateful that my wife took the old Coolpix sea kayaking (though it might have been moribund anyway). And I am glad I did not follow my leftover Nikon accessories to the purchase of another so-so camera.

4 Stars Great Camera
This is my first digital camera. It was necessary for me to read the basic part of the instructions to operate it, but it was easy to learn. It’s lightweight and fun to use.

5 Stars best camera i’ve had yet
camera is really small and compact, the 3x zoom isn’t impressive but it’s only for taking pictures with your friends. The HD video is good! 720p, the microphone isn’t as great as others though, I suggest getting a Flip if your looking for recording video.

Features?

not too many…

my aunt has a sony cybershot and it’s loaded with features,

BUT, i believe canon has way better picture quality,

there is almost no shutter lag but focusing it may take a second

that’s all for now.

1 Star Lousy Picture Quaity
I’m in a real minority here, and even though the camera is great in most all respects, the thing the camera is for – taking pictures – the camera I received produced terrible quality pictures. They were blurry appeared out of focus and were not usable. Nothing I could do seemed to be able to fix it, so now the camera is back at Amazon and I will get a refund shortly, I hope. This would have been my third Canon SD Power Shot camera and the others have been great, but are old and becoming limited. This could be a quality control problem, or poor handling between wherever and here, and concerns only the unit I got. So my question is – should I try the same model again or move on elsewhere. Anyone have any advice?

Film, as well as video, often exhibits a greater sensitivity to what is to us invisible, ultraviolet light. This is most often outdoors, especially at high altitudes, where the UV-absorbing atmosphere is thinner; and over long distances, such as marine scenes. It can show up as a bluish color cast with color film, or it can cause a low-contrast haze that diminishes details, especially when viewing far-away objects, in either color or black-and-white. Ultraviolet filters absorb UV light generally without affecting light in the visible region. It is important to distinguish between UV-generated haze and that of air-borne particles, such as smog. The latter is made up of opaque matter that absorbs visible light as well as UV, and will not be appreciably removed by a UV filter. The UV Protector shields lens from dust, moisture, scratches, and breakage.

5 Stars It is a good filter
I will begin by saying I am not a professional photographer.

I bought this to protect my Canon 18-135mm 3.5-5.6f lens. It arrived in fine condition, and was very easy to attach.

I have noticed no abnormalities in image quality, and it’s perfectly fine (and cheap enough) for my purposes.

3 Stars Portable Guy’s return policy
Can anybody tell me Portable Guy’s return policy or how to contact them? I get nothing but a circular set of instructions that bounce me back and forth between PG and Amazon and a message “Portable Guy has not specified their refund and returns policy” –I am at thomach3@yahoo.com

5 Stars Works For Me
It fits my Panasonic DMC-FZ35 and protects that great Leica lens so I’m happy with it. I must confess that I was momentarily confused as I’d expected it to mount on the outer ring, but it fits on the lens itself. Just extend it and it fits like a charm. I personally feel quite relieved knowing that the lens won’t accidentally get dinged or scratched while I’m using the camera. I’m not intending to play catch with it, but why take the risk when you don’t need to.

5 Stars A purchase absolutely necessary
It filter improve a little the image quality, furthermore it works like a shield anti scratches or any lens damage.

You must have one.

5 Stars Tiffen 58mm UV Protection Filter
Received quickly. Good vendor.

Good quality product.

I always use a protective lense on my lenses. That is why I still have and are using lenses I purchesed in 1974, and they are like new.

5 Stars Really nice camera, but movie editing needs improving
I have been taking pictures for about 45 or more years and this is my third digital camera, including my wife’s camera. Most of what I like to take is telephoto and macros and this camera is great at both. I have some pictures uploaded of some small white flowers on the back of my fence. They come out very clear. If the slight wind would cooperate, I could do better on some of the shots I took, but I tend to take a dozen to get one good shot anyway.

I can’t add too much more to what has already been said, so I will talk about the one point I think it could be improved. Editing movies. Although no digital camera can compare to a dedicated digital camcorder, they do come out rather well. What my complaint is about is the editing. There are two modes to shoot in. AVCHD Lite and MOTION JPEG. The AVCHD can be played on your big screen TV, although I cannot on mine, maybe not compatible with Samsung TV’s, I don’t know, but my bigger complaint is it cannot be edited on the camera, as my wife’s small Cannon camera can. It can be edited on the computer when uploaded, but then cannot be saved to your hard drive, but it can only be saved to a DVD disc. The JPEG version cannot be edited, but can be saved on to the computer, as easily as it does with my other small cameras. I don’t have any movie editing software on my PC except Windows Movie Maker, which does well for me if I upload movies from my wife’s Cannon, but not this camera, nor my other, the Nikon coolpix. If you shoot a movie in AVCHD mode, and edit it on your PC, you have to keep it on the camera memory chip and wait until you can upload it to a DVD disc. To me this is frustrating. So, depending on what you want to do with the movie you take, you need to be sure which mode you have it in before shooting.

5 Stars Fantastic still and HD camera with loads of manual settings to tweak!
This camera replaces my 5 year old kodak megazoom digital camera (great camera, but after breaking the lens while almost falling off a cliff in Kauai… it never worked the same). I’ve been borrowing my parent’s DSLR camera because the ability to set aperture, shutter speed, and focus (among other reasons), but I got tired of lugging around the large camera plus all the lenses needed to get great nature shots. I wanted something that was more portable but also offered good picture quality, zoom, manual focus, manual settings, and macro functions. I found it here with the FZ35. It’s a great camera that can take very high quality pictures- almost as good as my parents dslr (pentax k50?), but much more portable and less expensive. The other added bonus is the hd video function that you cannot do with most dslrs. Not only is the movie quality excellent, but you’re also able to zoom the complete optical range (18x), use manual settings, including aperture, shutter, and focus and you can even affix lens filters without needing adapters (46mm). I was in a toss up between the Canon and Panasonic- Panasonic won because it’s lighter, smaller, has a larger sensor, lens threading without needing an adapter, and about 100 bucks cheaper. I’m very happy with my purchase and it was worth the 3 week wait (backordered on amazon).

5 Stars A very good everyday shooter
I’ve only had this product a short time. But what I know is that with what time I’ve had with this camera, I have been very pleased with the picture quality. One thing I had do is set the camera to “P” mode as the Auto function is setting the ISO way too high. Having said that, however, the pictures that it produced with iA are still very acceptable, even at high ISO.

The camera and its multitude of functions are very easy to learn, if, and I say “If” you already have a lot of knowledge with photography. This kind of camera is overkill for my wife, who really is just a Point and Shoot type of person, but the camera is perfect for me. It’s also a tad small on my hand, the Canon SX20 IS is bigger and heavier, if you prefer that kind of feature of your camera.

Unlike many of the reviewers here, I am a Canon loyalist. However, when comparing this camera with the SX20, aside from the additional bells and whistles the Canon has, there is not much difference in picture quality. And even though I am a photography geek, I am not a pixel peeper, so what happens at 100% magnification when looking at the picture on your computer monitor, doesn’t matter much to me. If I can get a good 4×6 or 5×7 with this camera, I am happy. And this camera proved very capable of that. I will actually try printing a 13×19 and see what that would look like. So in this case, price really was the deciding factor in my decision to purchase this camera.

As an everyday type of camera, this is perfect. I can only comment on the pictures and ease of use at this time. I cannot say anything about the video as I have not had time to use it.

PS. The only reason I kept referring to the Canon SX20 IS is because that is the camera that is compared the most with the FZ35.

5 Stars Panasonic -Reviews.
Excellant quality – camera – Works well out of the Box – Kids look Great and playing soccer and Macro works well also, i got rid of the bulky cameras for one that has everything i am doing – macro, presets, Video – they sound great. – i was skepitical but the price was right and the camera works well – the kids like it to.

5 Stars What a camera
I am by no means a professional. I have a point and click 2.0 MP camera that is about 8 years old. Definitely time for an upgrade. I wanted a camera that takes great pictures with ease allowing me to focus on the actual picture. I also wanted a camera that I can grow with, tinker with and change settings. Well in this price range it was a toss up between this and the Canon, both great cameras from the reviews I read. Both cameras had their advantages and disadvantages, however for what I needed, the panasonic was the choice for me. This camera takes awesome pictures, it really excells at outdoor photography I am truly amazed at the clarity and vibrancy of colors. Indoors it does well too. I have not used the video function but I’m sure there will be no complaints there. The battery life is remarkably long considering the camera that im used to with 4 AA batteries. I prefer the battery pack over AA batteries. Charging takes about 1.5-2.0 hours not bad. This camera is fun and easy to use and I recommend it. You will want to get a camera bag to protect and carry the camera. Most of the bags out there are over priced, too big too small or lame. I came across m rock and the quality is supperb. The bag fits my camera and misc stuff perfectly it is stylish, versitle and the owner was very prompt with questions (we are talking within the day between 12/20-12/29) Definitely check out MRock camera bags.
