3 Stars So So
I like the idea of it, but a prime lens is far too limiting this day in age, especially when there’s plenty of zoom lenses that have almost as good quality and satisfy 90% of the needs.

This is a good lens for a very specific purpose – wanting a lot of isolation between the subject and the background/foreground.

I don’t recommend getting it for low light shooting because the thing doesn’t have VR – unless you have a tripod. Its low light performance wasn’t as good as I expected.

Mine might be defective but it always seems to focus a few inches away from where I centered on. I don’t know why, and i don’t care because i’m returning it.

Pros

Great image colors and sharpness

Great isolation

Cons

no Vibration Reduction

wide open aperture washes out some colors

5 Stars Great little prime lens!
After getting back into (D)SLR photography and buying a D70 from a friend, I wanted to get a prime lens that I could use in low light situations w/o flash. This neat little 1.8 35mm does the trick; it’s fast, sharp and crisp, with brilliant color rendition, quick AF, and no real problems I can see! Even the price is reasonable for a prime lens, IMO.

I also like that it’s small (compared to my 18-55mm kit lens), which makes it easy to carry both on and off the camera whenever I want to do ‘natural-light’ shooting. And being it’s a DX lens the x1.5 ratio when mounted on a Nikon DX DSLR gives you the same approximate field of view of a 50mm film (or full frame) lens, which has been the standard true-eye size focal length for 35mm film cameras for decades! It’s a great lens for for candids and scenery, and because it’s so sharp it can also do excellent portrait work, providing you get close enough (no zoom, remember?) to your subject..!

-Nice work Nikon, and please make some more reasonable Nikkor primes like this for those of us who cannot afford the huge prices on most of your other DX AF prime lenses. An f4 105 or 200mm prime for around $200 would be a lot easier to swallow than those over-$1K prices (which I can’t afford!) for all of the existing Nikkor 2.8 primes, IMO!

5 Stars Great Lens
The lens has been great. The quality of my pictures increased drastically with the 35mm lens. It works well and is easy to use with auto focus. Learning to use it with manual settings takes a little time, but worth every minute.

5 Stars Fast lens for fun around the house.
This light weight 35mm (52mm equiv) fast f/1.8 little prime lens is a kick in the pants lens for low light candid shots around our house. It’s overall brilliant performance in natural lighting conditions makes it unique enough on it’s own merrit for everyone to consider. The price is right at Amazon for a lot of value, and I can’t think of a negative comment to make about this handy little opticalgem.

5 Stars No brainer for dx cameras
I’ve had this lens for almost a month now for my D40 and haven’t used the kit lens since then. For under $200, every Nikon DX camera user should have one. I noticed immediately sharper pictures and much quicker AF compared to the kit lens. I may never use the kit lens again. Better build quality too. Rarely do I need to use flash which is the main reason I purchased this lens.

Nikon has gone and done it again at making a fine piece of equipment that’s not only easy to use but also has some of the finest Nikor imaging lenses and durable Life span would completely reccommend this camera

5 Stars A Great First Step
I received this as a gift a few days ago, and I AM IN LOVE! For someone as clueless about the nuances of digital photography, but still wants to take great pictures, this seems to be the perfect step away from the point & shoot.

Coming out of the box, it’s intimidating as all get-out. But I love how Nikon has added almost a mini-course book in digital photography to the kit (you can read about what comes in the box above, but for some reason I also got this great little book that explains aperture, f-stop, shutter speed, and all the rest of that as well as some exercises to help you explore your camera. My husband bought the camera at a local big-box store instead of Amazon, though, if that made the difference) as well as a quick-start guide and the more detailed manual to walk you through. So here I am, just a few days into being a DSLR owner, and already using the manual settings as much as the preprogrammed ones. And the shots, they are beautiful!

And another great feature about this camera is the ability to tweak the pictures while still in your camera. To play with the colors, trim, eliminate red eye, play with tones (sepia, b&w, cyan). My favorite is the warm effect, which subtly replaces some of the yellows in backgrounds/skin tones with more reds, which plays some amazing things on your pictures.

I hope this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship with photography!

5 Stars Great Buy for It’s Class!
After wanting, for the longest time, to own a DSLR, I finally bought the Nikon D3000. All the modes and features given in the D3000 are easily accessed and understandable. It took me awhile to figure out how to use the manual mode, but once I did it was amazing! As many have already heard, the Nikon D3000 is probably the best beginning DSLR anybody can get. It gives you professional quality photographs (sharp images) for a much cheaper price tag. I have come to love my Nikon D3000. I will definitely continue to tote it around with me everywhere until I decide to level up. I recommend this to everybody!

5 Stars Better than the Rebel
I have 2 close friends with Canon Rebels and I can confidently say this Nikon is noticable better!! In particular it takes better low-light photos and doesn’t seem to be as ‘confused’ as the Canon is on AUTO in low-light. If you value photographs and rely on a compact of any make, please go buy a DSLR. Even if it is a Canon, the picture quality is leaps ahead of a compact.

Back to the Nikon … it takes great photos, easy to use, small relatively speaking, good battery life.

Not that great: funny operation on the rapid FPS attempts, takes a while to take advantage of the focal points offered.

    Thanks,

    Shark.

4 Stars Give it some good use (A review for beginners)
Before getting into the pros & cons, lets begin with some brief info on entry level DSLRs. DSLRs allow more customization than point-&-shoot compact digital cameras, especially because of different factors like larger sensors & different lenses. For quick snapshots of your friends and family at a bbq, going out, or on holiday: point-&-shoot is perfect. Those looking to go beyond and make artistic photos, or capture great sights around the world: DSLR brings refinement (though point-&-shoots still VERY capable). I have to be honest, my Canon compact digital cam is hard to beat (great manual mode too), so I was weary of getting into just an entry level DSLR. Many people don’t realize the capabilities of DSLRs is in your hands, and you have to learn/work with it. If you pick up a DSLR just to use auto mode + built in flash 60% or more of the time, you’re wasting your time/money.

The Nikon D3000 is an entry level DSLR, usually packed with a pretty general 18-55mm kit lens (which still works great!), it doesn’t offer as many options as higher end models, nor does it have as refined of a sensor. This means it does not have the cleaner/higher ISO capabilities as high end models, nor does it process photos as quickly, & control/customization is a little limited (for refined studio/experimental/artistic photography).

    D3000 Pros:

    -Excellent photo quality

    -Fast continuous shooting

    -11 Point AF (auto-focus) multi-point system

-Easy, light body to hold compared to other models

-Different modes + TONS of customization features for each option

-In camera photo editing is awesome

-VR lens reduces vibration, excellent sharp images

-the built in flash is good (upgrade depending on your needs)

-Format of menus + buttons gives a fun learning curve to work with

    D3000 Cons:

-High ISO = noisy grain images*

-Auto white balance has a slight yellow tint (**I have a fix for that)

-No live view (which is ok for me)

-No movie recording (also not a problem for me)

*that noisy grain can contribute to better results in some black & white or grittier photos

    **white balance>fluorescent>white fluorescent>B2 M1 & +0.3EXP is a pretty good fix in some rooms

Live view may or may not be a feature people want. Because it’s omitted on this model, you have to use the viewfinder. I actually enjoy the experience of using the viewfinder, though I can see the benefits to having live view on the LCD screen. If you pass on this or any entry level DSLR because of lack of movie recording capabilities, you’re probably in the wrong market. However, if there’s room in your budget to get the D5000, it has movie recording, though it is not a priority in photography (sure is convenient though!). The auto white balance in any camera (without use of a flash) is quite challenging in fluorescent lighting, but customizations have allowed me to combat that. Low light + high ISO can come out pretty ugly in some situations, even with noise reduction turned on. I’d recommend working on lighting and lens variation for that.

The pros definitely outweigh the cons on this camera. It has been very fun learning about the features and options, which leads to more fun learning/refining various techniques in photography. I’ve done some great portrait, landscape, and experimental photography with it so far, and I’m very pleased. In the past 5 years, I’ve taken Canon and Sony compact cams on my travels around the globe, and they worked great. Some years ago, I did some 35mm photography, so in addition to my travels I felt ready to upgrade to a DSLR. The price of this camera is awesome for the quality you get. I’m still shocked at how pleased I am and I can’t wait to take it on my trips with me around the world this summer and fall. I highly recommend this camera as an entry level DSLR. However, if you have budget constraints, the D40 & D60 are nearly the same (used models are cheaper). Even a used Canon Digital Rebel will be great. My advice is to go with either Nikon or Canon and stick with that brand so that when you upgrade your camera body, you can use the same lenses. Ignore megapixel count unless you plan to make super large prints, a good camera is a good camera – do some research, learn it, and shoot! For those who have a little cash to spend, and want the movie recording, get the D5000. To be honest, if you’re a beginner or amateur photographer, any of these models will serve you well. As for me, I’m very happy with the D3000 and plan to keep it for a long time.

This item was what seller advertised. I didn’t know at time of purchase, it was not as wide as I would of liked. I’m still learning about my camera and had to purchase another lens with wider angle view. The other lens worked out better for people portraits, this lens good for light, quick snaps of variety of things.

This product wasn’t what I was looking for. I didn’t get detailed information about it so… this is a high quality product, was received in perfect conditions on-time but unfortunatelly doesn’t work with complete functionality with my D-5000 Nikon camera (focus must be make manually!)

4 Stars excellent lens for portrait photography
ease of you with d-slr cameras and a qiute fast lens its a good buy for

the price.picture quality is very good at iso upto 800

    5 Stars Nikon d90 user
The reviews I have read left me wondering if the auto focus was going to work with my DX camera. After receiving and testing this lens I can assure you the auto focus works well with a Nikon d90. But apparently not with earlier Nikon DX cameras according to some other reviews.

If you are deciding between this and the bit more expensive dx 35 then your decision should be based on what reach you want and price point. They are both fast and sharp and contrasty. D90 users, rest assured, this lens kicks ass.

    5 Stars Too much fun.
Got this a couple of weeks ago and have been playing around with it. The results are so great. I’m smitten!

If you’re debating on this product, just do it. You’ll probably love it.

5 Stars Fantastic Addition to Your Nikon DSLR
I bought my Nikon D5000 because I wanted to take the beautiful, lifelike pictures that DSLRs are famous for. After shooting for a few months with my camera, it became apparent to me that although the camera was better with low light situations than traditional point and shoot cameras, it was not giving me lifelike shots in lowlight. So I experiemented with the on-board flash and I’ll be honest, the results were NOT pretty. So I invested in this flash.

After four months of using it, I don’t know how I ever did indoor photography without this flash. It gives indoor pictures, even those done at night with low light, a natural look that mimics the colors and shadows you see with the naked eye. I’ve used the flash to take pictures of people and of objects, and the results are great. It’s easy to adjust the amount of light the flash “flashes” to suit the lighting you have on hand. I’ve only done some test shots outside, but overall I’ve been happy with the results. The flash talks to your Nikon camera body, and if you are using Nikon lenses the flash adjusts for your focal length and the distance your object is away.

I’m still learning tons about this flash and all of the options it offers for shooting. But overall, I couldn’t be happier with this product. I’m not a professional, but rather an amateur with a lot to learn about photography. But this flash is easy to use even for the amateur and will improve your indoor and low light photography and help you to get the pictures you wanted with your DSLR.

    5 Stars Very good
Very good flash. Does just about everything.

However, note, that it cannot be used as “Commander” when used on the camera’s shoehorn, however it can act as slave remotely when using built in flash as commander or using the SB-900 as commander. This doesn’t matter for 99% of people, but if you’re going to set up a shot using multiple flashes and ligths you’ll need to use the built in flash as commander or have the SB900. If you only have one flash, get this one instead of SB900. If you ever decide to get two or more then you can get the SB900 as your second one.

5 Stars excellent flash for $
This is an excellent flash for the money. I have it on my D90, and it adds perfect lighting for either 90+ mm or short range 30mm. The flash can be moved 90 degrees vertically, along with 180 degrees horizontally for vertical pictures. I would recommend a flash diffuser as well. Rechargeable lithium batteries have less than a second recharge time for the first 70 pictures, and then it drops to 2 seconds. Normal batteries don’t do it justice for quick “flash ready” status.

3 Stars …BUT IT DOESN’T SWIVEL ALL THE WAY!!!
This flash could easily be perfect. It’s well built with a metal shoe. It has a honest guide number of about 100 (ft). It zooms up to 85 mm. It works great in TTL mode, on camera or off camera as part of Nikon’s CLS, or as a manual flash triggered via the shoe (a PC would make it even nicer). Battery life and recycling times are good. To bounce backward you have to tilt your head a bit, because it’s so small, but you can make it work.

Now I belive there is a big advantages (among others) in modern digital flash photography over traditional flash photography, and modern speedlights should be designed according to that: If you are indoors, you can use almost anything as your light source – ceilings, walls, windows, furniture – by bouncing the flash, giving you softer and more directional light. The modern TTL systems adjust very well for changed flash distance (through bouncing), you may only need some fine tuning. Direct on camera flash with harsh shadows is no longer necessary indoors, and I feel it is also no longer acceptable.

Therefore one basic requirement for a modern on camera flash is, that you can tilt and swivel it in all directions. The best wall to bounce your flash off might just be behind you and to your right. Unfortunately this flash only swivels from 6 o’clock to 3 o’clock. The 90
