4 Stars Looking for a “bridge” camera? here you go…
I got this camera about a week ago and have been satisfied with it so far. I bought it for a trip to Australia later this year. am new to photography and wanted to get my feet wet with something more than a pocket point & shoot, but less bluky and cheaper than a DSLR or even a mini DSLR like the Rebel. aside from the bulk of carrying lenses, i wasnt quite ready to make the jump to a $700-$1000 camera.

As far as bridge cameras go, this seems to be a great way to go. the picture quality is quite good and photos come in nice and sharp when properly exposed. having said that, this camera is not a point and shoot. it is also not a DSLR. if you are expecting a substitute for a $2000 camera, you will be left wanting. I also find it the make some questionable exposure settings when i leave it on AUTO. it is fairly good size, not something that i would be able to put in my pocket. but it could fit into a midsized purse or a day pack fairly easily for a trip when you know you will be taking pics.

back to the point that this is not a DSLR. this camera cost $360! it is not a replacement for a full size, interchangeable lense camera with a full image sensor. having said that, the lense is quite amazing. at the wide angel, you get the full 28mm (35mm film equiv) and at full zoom, you get the equivilent of 560mm. and that lense offers surpirsing image quality over the whole spectrum. it does slow down (allow less light to reach the sensor) to F5.7 at 560mm, but it offers a steller F2.8 at full wideview. the image stableization also workes wonders on this lense.

the sensor chip on this is not the full size offered in DSLRs, this camera does have some low light noise. i found that on AUTO or P, the ISO would go up to 800 on a well lite indoor subject. i manually brought that down to 200, and still ended up with well lit photos without the noise. i cannot speak for the low light performance compared to other cameras in this class, but i have found little fault so long as you are prepared to dabble in the manual settings. just dont expect it to be as clear in low light as your D5.

The manual modes all seem straigh forward. you can switch between apature and shutter speed with a flick of the thumb, and both are readily controled by the central wheel. ISO is also easily accessable on the main wheel and the majority of the buttons are laid out with at least some amount of common sense. the menu is also easily navigated and offers a number of settings from flash strenght to power settings.

the flip screen is nice, although it seems like more of a novelty than anyhting else, i usually just flip it back to “normal” against the back of the camera view. the resolution of the image is quite good. which is fortunate because the smaller eye viewfinder is of relativly poor resolution. this is one of my gripes with this camera. if you are going to include a viewfinder, at least give it as good of resolution as the main screen. it is pretty much worthless for determining focus or fine picture taking.

I strongly recommend that you spend the $12 on the aluminum 58mm lense thread adapter. this camera does not come with one and while i do little in the way of filters, i do like having a clear UV filter to protect my lense.

This camera also has a hot shoe for those of you who will be doing anything that requires a finner tuch than the built in flash. i would by one if i were to do pictures for anything like a wedding where the built in would be to direct.

The 4 AA batteries were one of the buying points for me. It is good to always be able to get batteries and since i currently live in italy, and i travel alot, being able to carry or buy spares is important. on that note, i have taken about 200 pics, many with flash and about 8 min of HD Video (looks and sounds great BTW) and the batteries are still going strong.

over all i am happy with my purchas and think that this camera is going to end up being a good camera at a good price. I will provide more of a review after i get to use it more on my trip.

5 Stars Review by amateur
I bought this camera because I wanted the terrific zoom lens, a variable angle LCD, jpeg photos, and a viewfinder. I previously had a Canon so I figured the learning curve would not be too steep. The camera is more than I expected, actually, and now I’m interested in learning about it. It’s a shame that Canon is too cheap to include a Users’ Manual. Someone has written a book for the Canon Powershot SX20 with good ratings on amazon (but for $30), so I’m going to buy that, although it irritates me to have to do so.

I do wish the lens cap was attached. I’ve already lost mine and will have to get another.

5 Stars 3rd Canon of this type
Just a brief review of the 3rd Canon I have purchased. I started w/ the S5IS, then the S10IS and now the S20IS. I bought this one because it recorded video in High Def. The extra zoom and extra pixels are nice for cropping and the pop up help captions reviewing the manual functions were very useful. I am not an expert photographer, however based on the comments of many who review the pictures I keep they are amazed. I kept with the canon’s because all of the accessories are compatible, very little learning curve. I never run out of fresh batteries, and the other family members love when I upgrade. It is an awesome point and shoot camera. I made the decision that we will look allot more at stills than sitting down to watch videos. So I concentrated on the picture taking and I am glad that at any second I can push the video record button and almost as much control of the video, zoom etc., as a real video camcorder. The video is more than good enough for family movies and fun caught on the spot. So if you like taking allot of pictures and your family isn’t interested in learning all of the manual controls associated with this camera, this would be a great buy. I have tinkered with many of the manual settings and have caught many awesome pictures. My only beef is that the lens cap isn’t connected. I fixed that myself.

5 Stars Canon PowerShot SX20IS delivers great pictures
I have a PowerShot S5 and so was already familiar with the Canon features and workings. The PowerShot SX20IS delivers great pictures, great DVD quality video, great audio, and does it all in about the same size and weight as the PowerShot S5. The 20X zoom is really great. The wide-angle zoom provides a very wide fiedl of view with very little edge distortion. In most cases, I was able to stitch together panoramas using the wide-angle lens photos without a problem. Coupled with the anti-vibration feature, you can take great telephoto shots. The only thing I wished it would do that it doesn’t is to allow longer than 15 second exposures. Otherwise, it does everything I want and much more.

5 Stars only camera you’ll ever need
Got it a couple days ago…Made in Japan!! Bought the Adapter and a Extreme 3#10 SD card…8GB….So far I’m very happy with this camera….Hope to pu small bag on Sat….Had a good UV filter left over from SLR…Perfect with adapter….Had some eneloop Batt as well….Oh yeah….Bought lens cap holder…..My 58mm cap is much better fit…..Like I said….Made in Japan…..

The pocketable PowerShot S90 gives powerful everyday shooting. Shoot quickly with a lens control ring and get superior low-light performance with a high-sensitivity 10.0 MP CCD and f/2.0 lens. A high-sensitivity CCD sensor gives outstanding image quality in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Even images taken at high ISOs show exceptionally low noise levels and a wide dynamic range. A bright f/2.0 aperture allows exceptional versatility, capturing low-light images and fast-moving subjects at higher shutter speeds. A wide angle of 28mm lets you put more in the frame, while Canon’s optical IS reduces blur caused by camera shake.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great camera for the money
This is one of the greatest cameras I have owned. Picture quality is phenomenal. Very versatile. Like taking SLR pictures with a digital point and shoot. Some people have mentioned problems accidentally moving the ring when taking pictures but I have not had this problem. The only issue I have had is that the flash often pops up where I am holding the camera. Very small but powerful. Highly recommend.

1 Star Blurry Pictures…Ugh!
I bought this item just recently. I am a point and shoot photographer. I have owned several point and shoot Canons and have been quite happy with them. This one just didn’t behave like my other Canons. Half of my pictures were blurry and all seemed to be somewhat grainy. Total diappointment! I have sent it back to Amazon. I am not sure what to buy at this point, since I have always been a Canon fan, but this has shaken my trust in the product.

4 Stars First small form camera…
Quick impressions:

1. Working through the manual is not the quickest, so am using strictly on “auto” for now. Which means my shots are likely less than optimal at this point.

2. Not sure about “low light” as flash generally takes over and what you get is a flash picture. Not sure if flash can be overridden. But shot 85 pics indoors at a wedding reception and pics turned out okay, flash and all.

3. Regarding those same pics, they appear reasonably sharp when viewed on a 26″ high definition screen, though shot and stored as high res JPG’s.

4. Heavier than I expected, but I take that as a good thing. Otherwise, very portable. As part of intent was for my wife to easily carry in her purse, as we were missing too many picture opportunities with the grandkids. And she took most of the pics at the wedding reception.

5. Display screen is nice. No issues as such. 1st camera we’ve had without a viewfinder. So getting use to that.

6. The telephoto-wide angle lever is smaller than on my prior cameras, so I find myself fumbling just a bit to get a good finger tip hold to operate, but I would expect that to ease over time.

All in all, reasonably satisfied with my purchase.

5 Stars Love this camera
When it comes to photography, I am lame. Even though I am an artist, I could arguably be the worst photographer on the planet. My mom once complained that art school was a waste after seeing my shots. Seriously.

The main issue is a combination of clunky menus that work against you in the spur of the moment, the quality of the camera, or portability. You had to compromise on something. I hate lugging gear or fumbling with a lens cap but wanted something better than a simple point and shoot. Shooting photos was more frustrating than fun. It seemed like a chore.

The S90 is a really fun camera to use and takes amazing pictures. The lcd screen is large with good color which makes it easy to compose shots. The onscreen information is really useful since I’m always forgetting something. It fits in a pocket and is easy to customize (I Googled “S90 tips” to customize settings). The control ring feels intuitive and this is the first time I can adjust shots on the fly. The layout of the buttons make sense. I have never ever ever been this comfortable with a camera.

The other reviewers on Amazon were spot on about the experience. I am one of the small group of people who are fine with the ergonomics. I would agree with others that the flash takes getting used to and the couple of times it popped up, I was startled and dropped the camera but had the wrist strap on so no harm was done.

This is a camera that is fun to use and takes amazing indoor or outdoor shots with excellent color.

p.s. The non hd video is fine for my purposes since I am a worse videographer than a photographer. Besides, if you ever import stuff into a computer, the HD files are too large to process for what most people would ever need.

5 Stars Hard to find a better one
I just want to touch a couple of points, since they seem to be the most controversial:

-the back ring, the one all the people complain about: maybe it’s my way to hold the camera, but I never accidentally moved it, so it’s not a constant. There is a website that offers, for about 3 bucks, a sort of plastic ring that goes around it and it appears it removes the problem

-battery life: I really don’t find it limiting, I shoot more than 500 pictures with it, some of them with flash

excellent camera, it happens that I bring it even when I have the reflex with me, and for travelling in big cities it’s a blessing, pocket size and wonderful pictures, a lot of control!

Shy and modest is so yesterday. Get ready for brilliance that’s the center of attention once the PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH camera is in your hands. First glance says it all: nothing moves you like the impact of sleek sculpture, especially when it’s drenched in the purest, ripest colors. Inside, Canon engineers defy micro-space with big, brilliant innovation. How do they do it? Who cares!

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Canon
I read about this camera and ended up purchasing it. It takes great pictures! Have been using it for a month now and no problems. Really easy to use too. I have had numerous cameras but always go back to Canon… It is GREAT! I love this camera!

5 Stars Awesome!
This camera is everything it says and it’s smaller then I expected, which is even better. Canon has outdone themselves with this one.

5 Stars The Canon SD1400IS is Capable & Compact
In short, this is a great camera in a very small package that produces good results! I wanted a small portable camera with HD video capabilities that I could take with me when I did not want to lug around my DSLR (Canon 40D + lenses) and this little gem fits the bill perfectly.

This camera replaced a Canon PowerShot SD780IS (Black) that I returned due to constant audio noise (hum) while recording video. Rather than risk getting another defective SD780IS with the same issue (many seem to report hearing the noise/hum), I decided to upgrade to the latest Canon PowerShot SD1400IS (Black). I am happy to report that this camera has no such issue with audio when video is being recorded.

The picture quality of the SD780IS and SD1400IS is roughly the same and on par with what one should expect from such a small ultra-portable camera. Going from 12MP to 14MP is a wash as the sensor is the same size and results are very similar. I have posted several shots of flowers under the “customer images” section of the Canon PowerShot SD1400IS 14.1 MP (Black) and also uploaded several 100% crops of each image so pixel peepers can see the detail that this camera produces.

Let me be clear, anyone that thinks this camera is going to produce anything close to the quality of a DSLR is fooling himself or herself. There is no way that this small of a package (3.6 x 0.7 x 2.2 inches ; 4.6 ounces) can produce the same image quality as a DSLR. If image quality if paramount, one would be better off considering the Canon PowerShot S90 10MP Digital Camera, but you will lose the HD video capability, some portability and spend roughly another $125. When I want extreme quality, I simply take my Canon 40D + lenses with me and shoot in RAW.

The Auto mode is smart and I think there is more happening behind the scenes than one would expect. If one takes the same image (same ISO settings, lighting, shutter etc.) in Auto and then in Program mode, the results are similar, but I think the Auto mode wins nearly every time. I have no way to confirm this, but the Auto mode seems to have different compression algorithms depending on the subject and can produce a less noisy image at higher ISO than Program mode can. Inside shots are good but I wish I could set an ISO range to force the Auto mode not to exceed 400 ISO.

Tip: If you are getting blurry images, remember that the minimum focal length is much less 5cm when at 28mm and significantly more 50cm when zoomed in to 112mm. So, if you are trying to get the camera close to your subject, be sure to gauge your zoom/subject distances properly other wise your subject will be out of focus. Perhaps this would have helped the 1 star reviewer.

Final items of note:

1. There is no viewfinder and quite honestly, the small viewfinder on the SD780IS was useless so I do not miss having one. The LCD is bright and works great even on bright days.

2. There is no optical zoom while recording video, only digital zoom, so one has to decide on a zoom length before starting to record. This is a non-issue for me as many people overuse zoom and usually would have been better off just recording a static shot rather than making me dizzy with shaky-cam + zooming at the same time.

Bottom line: This is a fantastic pocket camera capable of decent images with HD video recording as a bonus. It is small enough that it will get taken everywhere enabling capturing of all those special moments. I would highly recommend it to anyone, so long as they realize the limitations inherent to ultra compact cameras. I hope this is review is helpful.

Update: I forgot to mention that one should be sure to get no less than a “Class 4″ SD card (Class 6 would be even better) to prevent any video recording issues (missed frames etc.)

4 Stars Made in China….?!!
I wonder anyone got this camera is made in china?

Its serial# 0420600XXXX

Btw, I felt it got cheap material with battery cover.

4 Stars Sleek and powerful, nice HD
For $250, I’m satisfied with the SD1400. It’s small and simple enough not to intimidate my wife which now means that Daddy can actually appear in a couple of family photos. The picture and video quality are excellent too. The only criticism that I have is that zoom is unavailable when shooting video and that the shutter is a bit slow to respond (as is the case with most of the cameras in this class irrespective of manufacturer).

5 Stars Awesome camera
I just got the SX20is and it functions very well, it’s easy to use and the picture quality is very good considering it’s a 12.1 MP, I highly recommend this camera to those who want to spend alot on an expensive camera, the price is just right for the SX20is.

Not to forget, the zoom is awesome as well.

5 Stars Great for those learning photography
This is a great beginners or intermediate camera, I love it! I’m by no means a photography expert, but wanted something more advanced and professional than what we had for taking pictures of our daughter – this camera is perfect. It’s fast, quiet, and easy to handle.

The Optical Image Stabilizer Technology is wonderful – many pictures that I would take of my daughter ‘on the go’ would often end up blurry or fuzzy and this feature greatly reduces or eliminates this problem.

I definitely like the Smart Auto feature, for somebody like me who isn’t much into the technical side of photography this feature is terrific – I don’t have to worry much about things like light, and shadow and settings, the camera analyzes everything for me and produces the best pictures automatically.

Another feature I really like is the ability to just hook the camera up to an HD-tv to view the pictures or video footage that is on the camera – instant viewing on the big screen, there’s nothing like it.

For the price and amount of features I’m very pleased with this camera.

5 Stars Beyond expectations
After reading several reviews, in different web sites, I decided to buy the SX20IS. However, the critics had lowered my expectations regarding the zoom range and high ISO usability. To my (good) surprise, I was able to get excellent pictures with both low light (which caused ISO to be set automatically to 400) and zoom in the range of 10 to 20 with no stable support, just holding the camera the best I could. My son, who has an SLR, was also amazed at the night photos. The combination of high ISO and Image Stabilization guaranteed reasonably sharp pictures in difficult comditions. Granularity is perceived only at ISO 800. This camera has extended the reach of photography, enabling the common user to take pictures they would never try.

5 Stars Canon Camera
I love, love, love this camera. I have only used it a few times, but it is awesome. I used the video once and if there is one drawback it is the quality of video playback on my computer. I haven’t had the chance bo get a connector cable for my HDTV yet, so can’t comment on that.

5 Stars Almost a DSLR
We are taking a trip to Alaska soon and wanted a camera with good telephoto capability. I really wavered bettween the Canon Rebel T2i with a good telephoto lens and the SX20.($349 vs. about $1200+) I decided on the SX20 becaused I didn’t want to lug around extra lenses, however I suppose someday I will have a DSLR.

Here are my pros and cons for the SX20

Pros

1. Seems well contructed. Not much plastic.

2. Good auto focus. I have not had the problems other have had with bad focusing.

3. Excellent HD video. In good light the video is great and you can zoom and auto focus which I don’t think you can do with a DSLR. Can be a bit grainy in low light, but acceptable.

4. Articulated LCD. I like being able to shoot from many different angles and flip inside to protect from scratches when not using.

5. Electronic viewfinder. This is great because you can see all of the same info that is shown on the LCD if there is too much light to see the LCD.

6. Zoom is terrific. I have even had okay pictures at 80x with a tripod. At 20x in good light pictures are almost always good. I have not seen any distortion. I took a picture of a quarter moon at 80x showing a good view of craters. My photo friends could not believe is was not through a telescope

7. Battery Life. Seems very good so far. I am guessing 300-400 still pix per battery set.

8. Lots of different scene and manual settings.

9. Flash seems pretty good. Red Eye reduction works well.

10.Bayonet threads on the lens allow for a 58mm filter adapter from a 3rd party. It does work well. Why didn’t Canon do this? I have polorizer on all the time.

Cons

1. A bit heavy and definitly not a pocket camera.

2. The Control Dial is really bad. You need a very light touch when turning the dial or you start messing around with other functions like Manual Focus and Self Timer functions.

3. Not sure about low light capability. I think this may be where a DSLR will do much better.

Overall I am pleased. I am anxious to try on Alaska trip.

The DMC-ZS7 features a 25mm ultra wide-angle 12x optical zoom f/3.3-4.9 Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens. Incorporating Panasonic’s advanced optical technologies, this lens system is comprised of 10 elements in 8 groups, with 2 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lenses and 2 aspherical lenses/3 aspherical surfaces while preserving compactness. This lens system enables a remarkable 25 to 300mm range of focal length in this compact body. The powerful zoom of the DMC-ZS7 can be freely controlled even when shooting motion images. Inheriting the fine rendering and outstanding quality of the Leica Elmar lens, this easy-to-carry camera delivers beautiful images any time, any place. Thanks to the intelligent resolution technology, the intelligent zoom is available with the DMC-ZS7 which extends the zoom ratio by approximate 1.3x maintaining the picture quality even combining a digital zoom. This means the 12x optical can virtually extend to 16x equivalent. Furthermore, the extra optical zoom function that extends zoom power to 23.4x by using the center part of the large CCD to bring subjects even closer.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Forget the Sony DSC-HX5V the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 is “The One”.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 is an incredible compact camera with a great set of features and build quality that the competitors simply do not offer. I’m not going to carry on about this camera as there are already plenty of websites and detailed reviews out there. I have I should mention tested both the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 and the Sony DSC-HX5V and the Panasonic is by far a superior product. Also I unfortunately didn’t order mine from Amazon as they didn’t offer the best price at the time. I ended up using pricegrabber and getting from Abe’s of Maine for $15 cheaper than Amazon with Free Shipping and No Sales Tax. I suggest to anyone thinking about making the purchase to go ahead and do so as its a quality camera that will surely make beautiful photos and videos for years to come, I was still using my five year old Lumix till the new one arrived last week. I partnered up this camera with the SanDisk Extreme 32GB card and am now ready for a vacation!

5 Stars Panasonic Luminix DMC ZS3
This is my 5th small size digital camera. Love the compact size, excellent hi zoom 12X optical performance, the photo quality, the smile detection, the hi-def movie performance, and the S/W.

It does need a second battery as battery life is less than 300 pictures especially when using flash.

Best picture quality of all my compacts and intermediate format digital cameras!

4 Stars Almost Perfect 4.5 stars!
This is a great camera for a beginner—Point and shoot. Lots of control for advance photographers. I’m sorry to say I don’t lug around a camera bag and tripod anymore. Just slip this in my purse.

I waited a long time to upgrade from the first generation Panasonic Lumix TZ1 (complete with dangling lens cover & 5MP) Glad I did. The best improvements are the quick power-up and lack of a shutter delay for catching fast action. If you leave it in the completely automatic mode it does an impressive job—and if you need control there’s plenty and then some. Lots of programs plus aperture and shutter priority or complete control.

Other notable improvements are in the macro end of things where capturing very fine close-ups are greatly improved—my TZ1 was always focusing on the background if I could get it to focus at all. This does an incredible job! Almost too much detail (if that’s possible) Every speck on the petal of a flower is exposed. This camera is slightly smaller and has a larger display screen. Most of the functions and dials are similar and I find easy to use but that may be because they are familiar.

Flash is improved over the first generation.

The zoom on the original was 10X. 12X even better. I took incredible photos of bullfrogs 15 feet away. Unbelievable detail.

This camera isn’t perfect and no camera will ever be. It would be nice to have a more powerful flash and nice if you could shoot in lower light with less noise without flash and it would be nice if it had a 20X optical zoom and a faster lens but for what it is its an incredible piece of engineering. AND don’t forget the Leica lens which is just plain beautiful.

All cameras have limitations and this is no exception. However it will get you a great photo most of the time. The wide angle to long telephoto range is why I bought my first Lumix. This flexibility makes for great travel photos. I did side by side comparisons of a Sony, Canon, Nikon and the first Lumix in the store and then we printed them out on the spot. No comparison. No ghosting, better color correction, better macro. And I like the ergonomics. I always place the wrist band over my wrist and hold onto the camera with fingers and pad of thumb and it feels secure. Some of the ultra small cameras are almost too small for me. (Didn’t compare to current models)

What is truly awful about this camera is that the manual is on a disk and covers this camera and its 2 predecessors making it a bit (if Not totally confusing at times). It also does not come with MAC compatible editing software which is really not a big deal for me. One person asked if it is MAC OSX 10.6.3 compatible and it is. The only problem I’ve encountered is in using Aperture (a MAC program)it doesn’t want to import directly into a project that has other images from my other Lumix camera. Make a new project and problem is solved but irritating. (Manual software and downloading from card to MAC is compatible)

Haven’t tried uploading video yet.

DO purchase an extra Panasonic Battery DMW-BCG 10PP. Make sure it has the PP (It won’t work without it) Also you’ll need a SD Card. It’s not necessary to go to the Class 6 cards unless you are shooting HD video. A SDHC 4GB card will hold 700+ photos at full MP.For most people this will be more than adequate. I carry two cards in case one goes south. You can always find them on sale for under $20. I also like the Caselogic TBC-302 Ultra Compact Camera Case for under $8.

5 Stars Panasonic ZS-7
This is an amazing camera, all my friends want it too, it’s handy, easy to pack and has big quality for its size! Little minor thing is the GPS functionality, it’s slow. But as a gadget it’s fun!

5 Stars Progress is fast
I bought the original camera in this line (the DMC-TZ1) three years ago and have absolutely loved using that camera. I have taken over 60,000 photos with it and couldn’t be happier. I never suffered any kind of technical problem with it – I only decided to get the ZS7 (or TZ10, as it is known in Europe) because the new features I read about were so enticing! In just 3 years, this line has raced through 4 generations and the improvements are amazing – despite which the price has stayed exactly the same.

Before I go into details, I should be clear as to what I personally am looking for in a camera, so that you may judge how relevant this review is to you. Things that I care about:

- I take photos everywhere I go, often at a moment’s notice, so it must fit in my jacket pocket and be quick to use

- it must have a good zoom since that gives me the freedom to frame subjects tightly and remove them from context

- it should be good at macros since I love taking macro shots

- it needs to take photos with as close to SLR quality as possible, given that it’s a compact

If you care about other things, like the packaged software (which I never use) or the various peripheral ‘features’ (e.g. face recognition, which btw does work – though sadly not on my cat ), then this review may not provide the information you’re most interested in.

Anyway, here’s what I’ve found in my first few weeks using the ZS7.

Everything that I loved about the TZ1 is present in the ZS7, but in improved form:

- it’s now even smaller and lighter

- I can get even closer for macros (down to 3cm!)

- I can zoom in even further (19x optical!)

- the awesome macro and zoom features now combine in the incredible ‘telephoto macro’ mode, which lets me focus on objects just 3 feet away at maximum zoom (the depth of field is simply gorgeous in these shots; bokeh like an SLR!). Definitely my new favourite feature!

In addition, I have been enjoying these lovely enhancements:

- image quality is improved along every axis:

-> noise: in addition to generally lower noise levels, ‘noise reduction’ can now be turned OFF and the overall improvements to image quality are fantastic – the ugly ‘grunge’ in the pixel noise that the TZ1 had was probably its single worst feature, and that is now completely gone.

-> dynamic range: images taken in bright sunlight are far less contrasty now, and I can take pictures of objects against the sky without ugly fringing and chromatic aberration around their silhouettes (as long as I get exposure right of course!)

-> colour balance: automatic white balance is in a new league compared to the TZ1. I was constantly changing the custom white balance settings for the TZ1, but with the ZS7 I’m happy to just leave it on automatic white balance 99% of the time (quite a relief!). Overall, colours look much more natural – they match how the scene looks to my as well as the SLRs that I have used.

- the new image stabilisation is absolutely UNBELIEVABLE – all but the most major jolts are smoothed out. This has a huge impact on the clarity of my shots when at max zoom or shooting in dim lighting (which let’s face it is not the forte of these small-aperture compacts), and the jittery videos you’d expect from such a light camera are now smooth as butter. Really, really impressive.

- speaking of video, the HD video is absolutely STUNNING. You could shoot cable TV on this thing.

- minor but very welcome improvements:

->  in-built lens cap (yay!)

-> support for SDXC memory cards (I used to empty my TZ1′s 2GB card every few days; my first 64GB card for the ZS7 isn’t even a third full yet!)

-> JPG compression artifacts are noticeably reduced

-> the new program/aperture/shutter modes give me a little bit more control under certain circumstances (though not that much, given the small lens you get on a compact)

-> the new UI is very streamlined (the quick menu is extremely useful and photo browsing is much quicker)

-> GPS works well, and it’s nice to have my photos automatically register on the world map once I upload them to Flickr.

Just so I don’t give the impression that I’m gushing uncontrollably, I should also mention the things that I don’t like:

- I wish the quick menu was customizable (e.g. I’d like to be able to use it to change aspect ratio and set custom white balance)

- I’m disappointed that zoom+scroll in review mode isn’t any quicker than before

- I really don’t like losing the ‘review’ button (review ‘mode’ resets the lens after a couple of seconds, to frequently irritating effect)

- auto-focus isn’t noticeably faster (one of the big general down-sides of compacts, unfortunately)

- there is the occasional encoding error when shooting videos, which Panasonic needs to fix in a firmware update

Those are pretty minor complaints, compared to all the great new features I’m enjoying. My old camera, beloved as it was just a couple of weeks ago, is already languishing on a shelf, all but forgotten! Before getting the ZS7, I would have whole-heartedly recommended the TZ1 to anyone that cares about the same things that I do (portability, flexibility and image quality), and the ZS7 stands head and shoulders above it in every regard. What more can I say? Get one!

5 Stars EXCELLENT!!!
Slim, light weight, large screen, well packed and shipped with just a little delay. EXCELLENT product! Thanks!

5 Stars Worth Considering
This camera surprised me. First of all, my personal cameras are big Nikons, so my ego tells me that this little camera is a toy and isn’t going to come close. I do have a point and shoot – a Canon G10, which is still a big, full featured camera with a lot of bells and whistles. I picked this out for a friend who absolutely didn’t want a larger camera (not enough purse room). I honestly expected to be disappointed.

And I was delighted instead. I opened the box and charged the battery and promptly discovered that there was no thick manual but a thin ‘getting started’ pamphlet. OK, thought I, I’ll play along, This was intended to be a camera for a non-reader of manuals so let’s pretend… I put the battery and a memory card in the camera, followed the pamphlet and bang (or rather, ‘click’) I had a great picture of my cat. Undaunted I headed outside and started aiming it at trees and scenery. And it did a great job every time. Loaded the pictures into photoshop and was suitably impressed with the image quality. And not once did I take the camera of Auto.

I eventually discovered the manual buried away on the accompanying CD and discovered that just under the covers was a very sophisticated machine. Plenty of options should my friend ever decide to go beyond point and shoot. Since the camera has image stabilization and is smart about shifting into macro I’m not sure that that ever will be necessary. But if she wants to shoot fireworks, theres a setting for that (and a whole bunch of other things).

Probably the most important feature of the camera is that it uses a touch screen rather than a lot of knobs and buttons. This will take a bit of getting used to, but once you learn how (and where) to tap on the screen you will find that most features are very easy to use. And the screen is quite large. One warning though – there’s no viewfinder, and big screens can be hard to read in direct sunlight. So there are times when you will have to point, squint, and shoot. Another thing to keep in mind with a large view screen is that, scratch resistant or not, if you drop it in your purse with a bunch of keys you will eventually scratch it. Get a small case of some sort (there are countless options).

This is a very good buy if the price is within your budget. Truth is, I’m not in any hurry to present it to my friend.

5 Stars Superb
It’s about the right size for a handy camera…not bulky!

The touch feature is very convenient and easy to use.

5 Stars Great camera for the value
I purchased this camera recently from Amazon. When I bought it I paid roughly U$ 270, which was a very good price when the same camera was advertised by other vendors at over U$ 300. For the money I paid, this camera is awsome. I am personally not too fond of touchscreens (I am more into the “analog” and “buttons” designs.. call me old fashioned), but this camera blew my mind. The touch screen is so intuitive you can get to every corner of the menu in seconds. It has nice futures as touching an area of the picture to select where to focus. Other things it has are creative effects, like selecting one particular color and leaving the rest of the image in black and white: this creates very nice artistic images whan you want a particular item to stand out in the picture. You can even select any color in the image and swap (in real time) for another… I tried taking a shot at the swimming pool, which locked pale and white, and swapped for an aquamarine turquoise which really enhanced the picture without making it cheesy or fake-looking… It’s like working with Photoshop in real time.. The camera is really small and practical. As I had read in other reviews, the batery/SD lid is quite flimsy, built of a thin plastic which doesen’t look very promising. The lids on the HDMI and USB connections also look like they’ll break before the camera’s first birthday. However, this is not a tough-built, rugged camera to take under the rain or on the trail, so provided you serve its intended use (parties, home, theatre, and anywhere where you’d take reasonable good care of a high quality optic instrument!), you should be fine. It doesen’t require silk gloves… just don’t fumble with the lids too often. The quality of the pictures is good but not outstanding, at least in auto modes indoors (I have an Olympus 570UZ which I think handles white balance more nicely). The HDMI is superb, and the real plus is the 24mm equivalent widescreen, which is great for indoor group pictures where little space would usually require everyone to huddle up so as to fit in the picture.. I would purchase this again.

5 Stars I am loving this camera
This is the third Canon PowerShot digital camera, which I have owned. Each has worked perfectly and the only reason I keep buying new models is that new features are introduced, which compel me to purchase the next generation…. good marketing, Canon!

What I love about this model: the tap-screen back, which enables one to quickly identify what part of the scene is to be tightly focused. And the 24 mm wide-angle lens (speaking in terms reserved for 35 mm cameras) is SENSATIONAL. It enables me to get much richer, more interesting shots than my previous PowerShot SD950 IS digital camera.

While the digital sensor in this point-and-shoot camera is no where near as large as the sensor in my CanonDigital Rebel T1i SLR, and cannot match the impeccable imaging of the larger camera, the PowerShot provides a stunning back-up camera — I am never without it. In Washington DC, last month, I was walking by the US Capital at 10 pm and had only my PowerShot SD3500 IS with me. I caught the gorgeous, lit dome and its mirror image in the reflecting pool in a shot that deserves to grace postcards or calendars. Love my PowerShot!

4 Stars Good Compact Size / Great Picture Quality
I am very pleased with the Cannon Powershot camera. I got it just a few days before my trip and was very pleased with the pictures I was able to take.

Its compact design made it easy to carry it all times. I used exclusively the ‘Auto’ mode as I had not had time to look into the more advanced features.

I do not think the use of these options is that intuitive. Still, the quality of the pictures was very good.

This camera does not have a printed manual; instead it comes with a DVD that contains the user guide. I wish at least a basic guide of the different programs/features were included to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the different camera functions.

5 Stars A Great Camera
I have been taking pictures with this camera ever since I got it to get a “feel” for it. I really can’t come up with something negative to say about it! I took motion pictures at a baseball game; shots inside and outside, and all came out very well. I love the size as it is easy to carry in my purse. The instructions that came with it were very clear. I have had several Canon cameras and they do not disappoint me.

5 Stars Best camera i’ve owned so far
I was just looking for a basic digital camera to take pictures with and am by no means a photo or camera buff. But for me using the Canon is fairly straightforward and I just leave it on the auto setting and am very pleased with the quality of the pictures. They are the best pictures i’ve seen with an entry level digital camera and I particularly enjoy the vivid details of the fairly large LCD screen that makes reviewing pictures much easier and pleasurable than i’m accustomed to. I was amazed at how small and thin it was; i mean length and height it is only a little bigger than a credit card (much wider, of course) but it also has a solid build to it. I could fit this easily into any pocket, even in my jeans. I’m glad i got this in time for my trip. Highly recommend this camera.

5 Stars Conventient and smart little camera!
My Dad bought me this camera recently. I am a fifth grade teacher and the size is perfect to have for class trip and activites. I’m not a professional photographer, so the fact that it is so user-friendly is wonderful. The quality of the pictures is better than any point and shoot camera I’ve ever had. I bought a 4G card, and I have never come close to filling it up with pictures and video. My ideal camera is one that is easy to use, doesn’t take up much space, and takes great photos quickly. This is the perfect camera for me!

1 Star 1 Star is for the 1 hundred plus dollars you will lose on this item
I recently purchased this item and now it is so messed up that I have to sell it to a recycling site for a fraction of the price I paid

The reason for this is because the thing is cheaply painted. I took this camera to Prom and had it in a padded pouch in my tux pocket when I wasn’t using it except for once when I dropped it, but it was still in the padded pouch. When I got home I discovered that it had at least four places where the paint had been chipped off the camera. Why? I had no idea until I held it in my hand and realized that even touching it some paint was coming off! This would not have been so bad if it was the only problem with the camera, but it isn’t.

Other things wrong with this camera:

The Iso: As one reviewer pointed out, the Iso on the default setting of this thing is very high. That is an understatement. the Iso is through the roof! the only way to take decent photos with this thing inside and out, is to go to programming mode and set the Iso differently for every different situation you are in. Not very convenient.

The shooting speed: When taking a picture, it takes almost two seconds to process and display the picture you are taking. that is very slow compared to some cameras half the price of this one. it also becomes a huge problem when you are taking pictures of a fast moving object, like an animal or car.

Blur: Any time you take a picture of someone with this camera, you have to have your subject completely still! any sudden movements will cause a blur that will ruin the whole shot. For instance, when I took a picture of one of my friends dancing, the image was completely blurred!

Rotating a picture: Canon is well known for allowing the user to rotate a picture by rotating the camera. On this model, when you rotate the camera, the picture either doesn’t rotate or it rotates very late.

Menus: The menus are very confusing. For instance, when I was looking for the Iso setting in the programing mode, I actually had to do alot of guess work before I found it. Even then the function was not named “Iso Setting” but something different. I can understand needing to read most of the instructions for a more advanced camera. but this is supposed to be a simple Point and Shoot. you should be able figure out at least the basic functions without them.

Zoom: When you zoom in on your subject you are very limited on the distance you can zoom in. You either have very wide view, midrange view, or very close view. there is almost no in between. the same goes for when you are browsing pictures in playback mode.

I hate to be so negative, but these are my true experiences with camera and I want to warn other buyers before they throw away almost $200 on this product. I have heard many good things about Canon’s quality, but bottom line is this camera does not contain any of it. hope you find this review helpful. As for me, I am about to go buy a Nikon Coolpix S3000. hopefully will have better luck with it.

5 Stars Super little camera
I love this camera! I’m a REALTOR and use the wide angle to capture views of properties and yards. Wonderful and compact.

I would recommend to anyone looking for a point and shoot camera with no fussing.

4 Stars It’s Canon…it’s good!
Bought this Canon because…well, because I like Canon products. My other Canon Digial Elph was taken on my last trip to the UK. This one will be used for the same purpose this summer. The photos are exceptional….and it is very easy to use.

5 Stars The best camera to have…
…is one you’ll have with you. The nice thing about the Canon ELPH series is they easily fit into your pocket, are well built/designed, don’t cost a lot, come with a boatload of features, and take great pictures. The SD1300, the latest in the ELPH line continues in that tradition, adding considerable additional sophistication and sacrificing some useful functionality in the interest of cutting cost.

It is a small camera and carries with it the baggage that comes with the convenience of having to carry so little baggage. (sorry, couldn’t resist) None of the issues raised, given that they comes as part of the convenience trade-off made me consider anything other than the 5-star rating this camera deserves.

- Many of the functions are only accessible through menus, sometimes several levels deep. The good new is the Automatic and scene modes are pretty good (as long as you spend a few minutes reviewing what they really do). This camera is not intended to be used in aperture or shutter priority, let alone full manual.

- The battery life might be shorter than you expect. That’s a trade-off for having a camera that’s small and light; you get a battery that is small and light. One thing you can do is get a spare battery. That is good advice for any camera. Another thing that will help is to keep the display off as much as possible. That means using the monitor as little as possible. The “sad” part is that Canon chose to drop the optical viewfinder in this model. That means a camera that is simpler and less expensive to make but will go through batteries quicker because you must use the display when taking picture.

- The camera response is a bit slow for effectively capturing children and pets. The trick for doing that is to either have a great sense of timing and a shutter that reacts instantly or a reasonably fast ( > 4x / sec ) burst mode. This camera has neither.

Some other suggestions that apply:

- Use the lowest ISO available given your requirement for either aperture or shutter speed. To avoid getting technical, higher ISO always introduces higher noise. At issue is when it becomes noticeable. In newer dSLR cameras you can get over 1000, maybe well over depending on the camera, before the noise becomes noticeable. For this camera keeping it at or below 200 is a good idea.

- Don’t use in-camera sharpening. Digital pictures will almost always benefit from sharpening but you are better off doing it with a photo editing program. Compuer-based algorithms tend to be more sophisticated and you can better judge the results on your monitor as opposed to the camera LCD.

- If you want more vivid colors and have the choice use sRGB instead of Adobe RGB. While you get fewer colors they are distributed over a wider range. They are also render better on computer monitors, many commercial labs, and any other place your pictures are likely to show up.
